India’s stalwart centre-back Sandesh Jhingan reflects on the evolution of his role

Sandesh Jhingan, the linchpin of India’s defensive lineup discusses the nuances of playing as a centre-back and the evolution of partnerships within the Indian football team.

Centre-backs in football often evoke an image of brawn and aggression. Yet, the role demands a nuanced comprehension of the game and its tactical intricacies.

India has a storied legacy of producing exceptional centre-backs, from Gostha Pal and Jarnail Singh to Syed Nayeemuddin. Carrying this heritage forward is current defender Sandesh Jhingan, a mainstay in the Indian team since his debut in 2015, having featured in 60 international matches and captaining on seven occasions.

While his defensive partners have shifted over time – from Arnab Mondal, Anas Edathodika, Adil Khan to contemporaries like Anwar Ali and Rahul Bheke – Jhingan has remained a constant.

“I relish the centre-back position. It demands a strong partnership,” expressed Jhingan to the-aiff.com. “I’ve been fortunate to play alongside top defenders of our time.”

“In my early days, I was the fourth-choice centre-back, learning from legends like Mangi bhai (Gouramangi Singh), Arnab Mondal, and Raju Gaikwad,” recalled Jhingan. “Their mentorship was invaluable. Subsequently, I partnered with Anas, Adil, Anwar, and Rahul, facing many battles together. I consider myself lucky to have shared the pitch with them all.”

In 2023, Indian defenders earned accolades for achieving nine clean sheets, with credit silently attributed to former India centre-back and current assistant coach Mahesh Gawali. His influence and experience command immense respect within the team.

“Mahesh bhai’s stature is immense. His contributions, both as a player and coach, are invaluable,” praised Jhingan. “He deserves acknowledgment for our defensive successes.”

Recalling their first meeting, Jhingan reflected, “Subrata bhai (Paul) introduced me to him, highlighting my potential. I sought his blessings. That’s the reverence he commands.”

As India gears up for the AFC Asian Cup, facing Australia, Uzbekistan, and Syria, Jhingan emphasizes maintaining focus on the task at hand.

“Tournament atmospheres are thrilling, but concentration is key,” he remarked. “The experience is felt afterward, and we’re grateful to partake in such a prestigious event. The journey to this stage fills us with pride.”

As Sandesh Jhingan readies himself for the Asian Cup, his unwavering commitment remains a cornerstone in India’s defensive fortitude, poised to make an impact on the grand stage.
