India’s T20 Hopes Hinge on Pooja, Deepti, and Shreyanka: Reema Malhotra

Former cricketer Reema Malhotra believes India’s bowling trio of Pooja Vastrakar, Deepti Sharma, and Shreyanka Patil will be crucial in the upcoming T20I series against Australia.

Former Indian cricketer Reema Malhotra thinks Pooja Vastrakar, Deepti Sharma, and Shreyanka Patil will have a significant role in the upcoming three-match T20I series against Australia starting on January 5 at the DY Patil Stadium.

India’s recent T20I series ended with a 2-1 loss to England at the Wankhede Stadium. Although they won consecutive Test matches against England and Australia, India faced a tough 3-0 defeat in the ODI series against Alyssa Healy’s team.

In the limited-overs matches played so far, Pooja, Deepti, and Shreyanka have been taking wickets for India. “In a T20I game, the batters need to shine, but the bowlers are equally vital for India. Shreyanka Patil showed her skills in the two matches against England. Deepti Sharma has been consistently excelling, in amazing form,” commented Reema.

Another standout performer I’d like to mention is Pooja Vastrakar 2.0. Her brilliant performance in the series was impressive. Her role will be crucial for the team in this T20I season. Also, these three players can contribute equally well with the bat. So, a lot depends on their bowling skills,” remarked Reema on JioCinema‘s daily show ‘#AAKASHVANI’.

One of the noticeable weaknesses in India’s game has been their fielding, notably seen in the ODI series defeat with many dropped catches and misfields. Reema emphasized the need to avoid repeating these fielding mistakes and expects improvements in this area during the T20I series.

“To defeat Australia, you need to outperform them in all three areas. India had some issues in batting and bowling, but I believe they can recover because they’ve been playing well. They just need to push a bit more for the win.”

But I believe the primary concern lies in our fielding. Regarding fitness, I see substantial improvement in this team. However, in one game, we witnessed numerous dropped catches, and such mistakes can’t happen again. I think they just need to trust in themselves, and that will lead to improvement,” she remarked.
