The Indian Premier League (IPL) has been one of the most popular and lucrative T20 leagues in the world since its inception in 2008. Most runs in a season: The first season of IPL saw Australian opener Shaun Marsh of Kings XI Punjab score the most runs in a season, with 616 runs in 11 matches. He was instrumental in taking his team to the semi-finals of the tournament, but unfortunately, they lost to Chennai Super Kings.
Highest individual score: Brendon McCullum, the New Zealand opener, created history in the first match of IPL 2008 by scoring an unbeaten 158 off just 73 balls for Kolkata Knight Riders against Royal Challengers Bangalore. This was the highest individual score in T20 cricket at that time and remained so for several years.
Most sixes in a season: Sanath Jayasuriya of the Mumbai Indians holds the record for hitting the most sixes in the first season of IPL, with 31 sixes in 14 matches. He was one of the key players for Mumbai Indians, who finished fifth in the tournament.
Most wickets in a season: Sohail Tanvir, the Pakistani left-arm pacer, had an outstanding season with the ball for Rajasthan Royals. He finished the tournament as the highest wicket-taker with 22 wickets in 11 matches, at an impressive average of 12.09.
Best bowling figures in an inning: Sohail Tanvir also holds the record for the best bowling figures in an inning in IPL 2008. He took 6 for 14 against Chennai Super Kings, which remains the best bowling figures in IPL history.
Fastest fifty: Adam Gilchrist, the former Australian wicket-keeper batsman, scored the fastest fifty in the first season of IPL, off just 17 balls for Deccan Chargers against Mumbai Indians. This was a crucial knock as it helped Deccan Chargers chase down a target of 155 in just 12 overs.
These were some of the notable records set by players in the first season of IPL. Over the years, many players have broken these records, but they will always be remembered for their contributions to the inaugural season of this popular T20 league.
