IPL 2021: Commentator Aakash Chopra points out chinks in RCB’s armory

Chopra was critical of not using Washington Sundar properly as bowler. He also pointed out Yuzvendra Chahal lackluster performance and focused on their lack of batting depth.

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) had a brilliant season in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021. With five wins from seven games, RCB was placed third on the points table. Batting and bowling looked balanced this season which was missing over the years.

Former India batsman turned commentator Aakash Chopra, on his YouTube channel while analyzing RCB’s chances to win their maiden IPL title this year, highlighted RCB’s shortcomings.

Washington Sundar
“I feel RCB did not utilize Washington Sundar properly as a bowler. You can get him to bowl more but you are not doing that,” said Chopra. Sundar, a bowling all-rounder, accounted for just three wickets in six matches and bowled just 96 balls (16 over) in IPL 2021.

Yuzvendra Chahal
“Yuzvendra Chahal’s form was a concern. He took just a couple of wickets in the season till now. If he is not taking wickets and you are giving him less bowling, that’s not going to work for RCB in the long run,” observed Chopra. Chahal’s performance – four wickets in seven matches.

Who at No. 6?
The major question concerning RCB’s batting was who would be giving them finishes at number six. “RCB’s batting is not weak but lacks depth. Kohli and Devdutt open, you played Rajat, Shahbaz, or Washi at No.3 just to lengthen the batting. After that Maxwell at No.4 and AB de Villiers at No.5. But who at No.6?” questioned Chopra.

“They did not have a batsman at No.6. Sometimes you played Daniel Sams, sometimes Daniel Christian, or played Washi down the order. If a team does have batting at No.6 and No.7, there is a lot of pressure on the top five. They have managed now, but I do see it as a weak link,” added Chopra.

Always dependable AB de Villiers
Chopra was all praises for Mr. 360, AB de Villiers for bailing out RCB from deep troubles most of the time.
“AB de Villiers is a genius. It is because all of us were saying that he should be batted up the order because the more deliveries you give him, the more impact he will have. But RCB was sending him at No.5. If you are sending him at No.5, how will the team and he do well? But AB de Villiers said it does not matter to him whether you play him at No.5 or in Mars, he will be absolutely fine.” said Chopra.

IPL 2021 was called off mid-way because of the bio-bubble breach.
