IPL 2021 update: “Ready to lead KKR if required”: says former captain Dinesh Karthik
KKR may see Dinesh Karthik as its captain for the remaining matches of IPL 2021 in UAE due to unavailability of Eoin Morgan.
Indian wicket-keeper and Tamil Nadu Cricket captain Dinesh Karthik stated he is up and ready for accepting Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captaincy if there is a need for it. Karthik was replaced with Eoin Morgan as KKR captain mid-way through the IPL 2020.
In an interview with The Times of India, Dinesh Karthik revealed the details. There is a good chance of Karthik returning as full-time KKR captain as their England captain Eoin Morgan may not be able to travel to UAE given the England Cricket Board wants to rest their players for World T20 later this year. Still, Karthik is hopeful for Morgan to return.
The IPL 2021 was suspended on May 4 as there were multiple COVID-19 positive cases among players and support (coaching) staff. Only 29 matches were played before the suspension. The remaining 31 matches were recently moved to UAE by BCCI as they hosted a successful IPL season in 2020.
After COVID-19 breaching the bio-bubble in India, international players are doubtful of revisiting IPL. Some have sighted their busy calendar for national duty as a reason. Karthik also confirmed that Australian pacer Pat Cummins won’t be a part of the second phase of IPL 2021. Yet Cricket Australia hasn’t talked to their players.
“Pat Cummins has himself said that he will not come. But when it comes to Eoin Morgan, there are still three months to go. A lot can change from now till September. But if I am asked to lead, I will be ready for it,” said Karthik.
Karthik scored 123 runs in seven games and Pat Cummins took 9 wickets and scored 93 runs seven games in IPL 2021. KKR was placed 7th on the points table with 2 wins from 7 games until IPL 2021 was suspended.
