Sunday saw Royal Challengers Bangalore begin their IPL 2023 campaign with a decisive victory over the five-time defending champion Mumbai Indians (April 2). Virat Kohli’s unbeaten 82 off 49 balls and Faf du Plessis’ 43-ball 73 helped the team led by Faf du Plessis reach the target of 172 runs in 16.2 overs with just two wickets lost. RCB defeated Mumbai Indians for the fourth time in a row on Sunday, while MI’s 11-year losing streak in IPL season openers has now been broken.
In front of their home crowd at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, RCB easily overcame the 172 run target to earn a convincing victory. The goal would have been much easier to achieve if Tilak Varma had been eliminated for a low score. The 20-year-old Varma led MI in scoring with 84 runs from 46 balls while still being unbeaten. His outstanding performance with the bat allowed MI to reach a respectable total. After MI captain Rohit Sharma was out, Tilak entered the crease as the number 5 batter. In the first game, Rohit, who had trouble scoring big runs in the IPL the year before, was unable to contribute much and was out after scoring just one run off of ten balls.
On the second ball of the sixth over, when Dinesh Karthik finished a routine catch, Akash Deep Singh ordered him back to the dugout. Karthik did, however, throw the Indian captain a lifeline before finishing the catch. Mohammed Siraj was bowling the fifth ball of the fifth over when the incident occurred. Rohit attempted to play an aerial shot, but the ball did not come to bat properly and only travelled a short distance after rising straight up.
Virat was incensed when the opportunity to help the RCB was lost due to Rohit’s dropped catch. His outraged response after the dropped catch caught everyone’s attention.
On social media, a video of Virat venting his annoyance has gone viral.
The most prolific IPL run-scorer, Virat, reached his 3000th career run on Sunday while opening for the RCB in the league and compiling an unbeaten 82 runs.
