Due to a knee injury sustained by Gujarat Titans’ Kane Williamson during the IPL 2023 opening match against Chennai Super Kings in Ahmedabad, there are speculations that he may have to withdraw from the competition. This has led to enthusiastic chatter among fans on social media about the possibility of Steve Smith, an esteemed Australian batter, being recruited as a replacement player for Williamson.
Sanjay Manjrekar, a former Indian cricketer, has expressed his belief that if Smith were to join Gujarat as a replacement player, he could assist captain Hardik Pandya with leadership responsibilities. Manjrekar has stated that Smith’s versatile playing style would make him a valuable asset to the team.

It remains to be seen whether Smith will be signed up for IPL 2023 as a player. He has expressed uncertainty about his eligibility, as he did not enter the auction. Smith is also committed to playing three first-class matches for Sussex in the County Championship season in May, followed by the World Test Championship final against India and the Ashes in England in June.
Smith has previously played for several IPL franchises and captained Pune to the runners-up finish in 2017. In 103 IPL matches, he has scored 2485 runs with an average of 34.51 and a strike-rate of 128.09, including a century and 11 fifties.
When asked about his experiences in the IPL, Smith shared that he enjoyed playing against the world’s best players and learning from them. He also praised the growth of the IPL over the past 15 years.
