Lucknow Super Giants’ (LSG) chances of making it to the IPL 2025 playoffs are starting to slip, as the team has struggled with consistency. Their recent loss to Delhi Capitals has made things even tougher for them in the race for qualification.
LSG’s Playoff Hopes Take a Hit After DC Defeat
LSG suffered a big 8-wicket defeat against Delhi Capitals in the 40th match of IPL 2025. The game was held on Tuesday, April 22, at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow.
Delhi Capitals earned their 6th win of IPL 2025 with a strong all-round performance, beating Lucknow Super Giants and moving up to second on the points table.
LSG, after being asked to bat first, got off to a great start with Aiden Markram (52) and Mitchell Marsh (46) adding 87 runs. But DC fought back quickly, reducing them to 110/4. Ayush Badoni’s 36 helped LSG finish at 159/6. Mukesh Kumar was the star with the ball for DC, taking four wickets.
Delhi Capitals lost Karun Nair early in the chase, but Abishek Porel (51) and KL Rahul (57*) built a strong 69-run partnership that turned the game in DC’s favor. Captain Axar Patel (34*) then finished the job with some big hits as DC chased down the target with eight wickets to spare.
This defeat was Lucknow Super Giants’ fourth in nine games. They now have 5 wins and 10 points in IPL 2025.
Can LSG Still Make the Cut? Scenarios Explained
To reach 16 points, which usually guarantees a playoff spot, LSG need to win 3 of their remaining 5 matches. If they win only 2, they’ll finish with 14 points, and their qualification chances will depend on net run rate and other teams’ results.
If they lose more than three of their last five games, their playoff hopes could end. A total of 12 points is generally not enough – only once has a team (SRH in 2019) qualified with that.
LSG’s next match is against Mumbai Indians on Sunday, April 27, at the Wankhede Stadium. After that, they’ll play Punjab Kings in Dharamsala on May 4 and then host Royal Challengers Bengaluru on May 9.
