IPL Hat-Tricks: Complete List And History Before 2025
Have a look at the list and history of IPL hat-tricks so far.

Taking a hat trick in cricket is one of the most spectacular things any bowler could have done. Doing it in the short form that is the Indian Premier League is even more special, considering the small ground and mallet-wielding batsmen, which makes IPL a tough ground to challenge the bowlers yet many over the years have successfully done so.
As we reach the 2024 season of the IPL, let’s look more into the history behind hat-tricks within the tournament, how many have been recorded so far, and which bowlers have created a record by getting more than one hat-trick in their careers.
How Many Hat-Trophies Have Been Taken in IPL?
Since the beginning of the IPL in 2008, a total of 22 hat-tricks have been taken by 19 different bowlers in the 17 seasons of the league, including the ongoing 2024 edition. Hence, it tells how rare yet exciting such an event is in the high-scoring T20 format.

For the first time in the 2023 season, Rashid Khan, the Afghan spinner of Gujarat Titans, became one of the hat-trick takers with his stint against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). The match was full of action, and Rashid took three extremely crucial wickets: Andre Russell, Sunil Narine, and Shardul Thakur; the last two off the same over by a six and a four, sending the match to an end while dangling Kolkata’s run chase.
Who Is the First IPL Hat-Trick Winner?

The first hat-trick of IPL history goes to the credit of Lakshmipathy Balaji, an inaugural player for Chennai Super Kings in the 2008 season. His three wickets in the final over of the match which helped CSK to win the important game against Kings XI Punjab it is going to be one of the most memorable hat-tricks that appeared in IPL history.
Who Are the Bowlers to Have Taken More Than One Hat-Trick?
Many have come claiming IPL hat-trick but few have repeated the performance. The most notable amongst them are Amit Mishra and Yuvraj Singh, both of whom have taken more than one hat-trick in the tournament.

And, of course, the record for the most number of hat-tricks in the IPL is held by yet another of the greats – the veteran leg-spinner Amit Mishra. He has three hat-tricks to his credit. His first was in 2008 for Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals), the second in 2011 for Deccan Chargers, and a third in 2013 for Sunrisers Hyderabad. Mishra was one of the greats as he could bowl at the powerplay and middle overs, which scared the opposite team all through.

Yuvraj Singh is one of the most recognized all-rounders in India. He even took two hat-tricks in the IPL. Both were for Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) during the 2009 season—one against Royal Challengers Bangalore and the other against Deccan Chargers. His performances both batting and bowling in the IPL for him made him the stalwart of the IPL league.
Other Memorable Hat-Tricks
Other notable hat-tricks of the IPL are as follows:
Rohit Sharma who was known more for big hitting had managed a hat-trick with the ball in the 2009 season. It was when he skipped Deccan Chargers and got the wickets of Abhishek Nayar, Harbhajan Singh, and JP Duminy in three consecutive deliveries. It is very rare and out of context considering the fact that he was the Indian captain, and one would expect more of his all-round skills.

Another memorable moment was when Rashid Khan took the hat-trick against Kolkata Knight Riders at Ahmedabad in the IPL 2023 season. The bowls can genuinely take crucial wickets at a crucial point of the match and his reputation as one of the best bowlers in the T-20 had gone further.

Hat tricks are regarded as one of the rarest and the most thrilling events of cricket, and IPL will also have its fair share of such game-changing events. From Lakshmipathy Balaji’s historic first hat trick in the series to Amit Mishra’s record three hat tricks, the IPL has gifted fans with many bowling performances that no one will ever forget.
With 22 hat-tricks recorded to date, bowlers will continue to work towards achieving this prestigious feat in the incoming 2024 season and beyond. As the tournament continues, fans eagerly await whether another player will join the elite group of hat-trick takers in this high-octane competition.
