The Indian Premier League (IPL) is one of the most popular domestic T20 leagues in the world due to its high level of entertainment. Players from all over the world compete in this extravagant game to showcase their skills and make money. Since its beginning, the BCCI’s flagship annual tournament has been a hugely profitable one, with cricket benchmarks improving with each season. The efficiency of teams and players continued to improve, and the number of boundaries broken increased with each season of the IPL.
On average, we see a rise in the number of boundaries and sixes hit each year. Furthermore, the number of boundaries hit is determined by the type of ground on which the tournament is played. However, in India, the fields are generally conducive to batting. Let’s take a look at the total number of fours and sixes hit in each IPL season, year by year. Between 2008 and 2021, a maximum of 23445 fours were hit in 884 tournament games. In the 2013 IPL season, 2052 fours were hit in 76 matches, the most ever. A total of 1975 fours were hit in 2022.

Paul Valthaty
This opener rose to prominence while playing for Kings XI Punjab in the 2011 IPL. After dropping the toss in the ninth match of the season, Chennai Super Kings set a target of 189. Paul Valthaty batted first for KXIP and scored an unbeaten 120 runs off 63 balls, leading his team to victory with 19 fours and two sixes. Valthaty also tops the list of batters with the most fours in an IPL innings.

In the 46th match of the IPL 2015, RCB posted a humungous total of 235/1 in 20 overs after deciding to bat first against rivals Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians. AB de Villiers went on to score 133 runs off 59 balls, hitting four sixes and 19 fours. RCB dominated the game against MI by 39 runs, and AB de Villiers is second on this list with 19 fours.

In the 38th match of the IPL 2010, Rajasthan Royals were hunting down a count of 154 set by Kings XI Punjab, and English player Michael Lumb hammered 83 runs off 43 balls. Lumb hit 16 fours and two sixes in his inning as Rajasthan Royals managed to win by 9 wickets with 30 balls remaining.
- Ajinkya Rahane
After dropping the toss and batting first in the fourth match of the IPL 2012, Rajasthan Royals were powered to 191/4 in 20 overs. Ajinkya Rahane led the way with 98 runs off 66 balls, hitting 16 fours and one six. RR defeated Kings XI Punjab by 31 runs, and Rahane ranks fourth on this list of most fours by batters in an innings in IPL history, with 16 fours.

After being asked to bat first in the second qualifying match of the IPL 2012, opener Murali Vijay energized Chennai Super Kings to 22/5 in 20 overs against Delhi Daredevils. Vijay managed to score 113 runs off 58 balls, including 15 fours and four sixes. CSK wound up winning the match by 86 runs, with Vijay scoring 15 fours, placing him fifth on the list of top batters with the most fours in an innings in IPL history.
