IPL: Top 5 most expensive spells by bowlers

IPL, just like any T20 cricket format has been a terrifying tournament for bowlers. Here is a look at the top 5 most expensive spells in IPL history.

Indian Premier League over the years has seen many batting and bowling records. Harshal Patel’s 30 wickets in the 2021 season are the highest by any Indian bowler and second to Dwayne Bravo’s 32 in 2013. Over the years bowlers have also registered their names in unwanted record lists. Here is a look at the top 5 most runs conceded by bowlers in IPL.

Basil Thampi vs RCB

Basil Thampi in his four overs conceded 70 runs against the Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2018. Thampi was playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad at the time and went on to concede 37 runs in his first two overs. Experts believed that he was done for the day after his first two overs went for runs. Kane Williamson, captain of SRH, surprisingly still gave the Indian pacer duty to bowl the 16th and 19th over of the innings which conceded 33 runs.

Thampi’s spell proved to be very crucial in the game as SRH while chasing RCB’s 218 managed to score 204 and fell short of the target by just 15 runs.

Yash Dayal vs KKR

Gujarat Titans hosted the Kolkata Knight Riders for the 13th match of IPL 2023. In the second innings for 19 overs everyone believed that GT will win the game. Yash Dayal who had gone for 38 runs in his first three overs was given the responsibility to bowl the last over and defend 29 runs. Umesh Yadav took the single off the first ball. This meant that Rinku Singh came on strike and smashed 5 sixes on the next 5 balls making Yaking Dayal’s 4 over spell the second most expensive spell in IPL history. Dayal conceded 69 runs in his four overs.

Mujeeb Ur Rahman vs SRH

Afghanistan spinners over the years have enjoyed a lot of success in the IPL. Mujeeb Ur Rahman was no different than his national compatriots and had some great performances in the marquee event. In a game against SRH, Mujeeb got his name on an unwanted list. Mujeeb in his 4 overs conceded 66 runs making his spell the most expensive by an overseas bowler.

Mujeeb’s first two overs went for 26 runs and his third over went for 12 runs. His fourth over went for a whopping 26 runs.

Ishant Sharma vs CSK

The joint third-most costly IPL spell in history belongs to Ishant Sharma. During the 2013 IPL season, Chennai Super Kings gave him a brutal beating. Ishant Sharma played for SRH and bowled the second over of the innings. He gave up 11 runs in his opening over. Murali Vijay smashed him for three sixes in his second over. Ishant’s final over turned out to be the most costly one as he allowed 25 runs after being struck by Raina for four fours and a six.

Umesh Yadav vs RCB

Umesh Yadav conceded 65 runs in his full quota of four overs against RCB. Bowling in the first innings his first two overs went only for 18 runs but his last two overs went for 23 and 24 runs thanks to Virat Kohli and Ab de Villiers.
