The Ireland cricket team, which represents the country in international cricket, is governed by the Irish Cricket Union under the brand Cricket Ireland. Ireland was granted Associate membership of the International Cricket Council (ICC) in 1993. It played its first One Day International (ODI) match in 2006 against England in preparation for the 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup.
Ireland has recently been making waves in the world of cricket, with impressive performances in international tournaments and against top-ranked teams. Impressive results against Full Members cemented the team’s successful qualification during the tournament, including a draw against Zimbabwe and wins against Pakistan and Bangladesh. Since then, the Ireland cricket team has played 176 ODIs with 74 victories, 89 defeats, 10 no results, and 3 ties. In 2009, the group became professional with the introduction of player contracts.
One Day (International) Status till now
In 2007, Ireland participated in their first Cricket World Cup and performed well, recording a tie with Zimbabwe and beating the fourth-ranked team Pakistan. After that, they made it to the Super 8 stage but lost their matches against England, South Africa, New Zealand, Australia and Sri Lanka. Finally, however, they recorded a victory against Bangladesh. After the World Cup, former West Indies cricketer Phil Simmons took over as coach, and Ireland went on to win the 2007-08 ICC Intercontinental Cup.
In 2009, Ireland hosted the European Cricket Championship (Division One) and won their third title. They also qualified for the 2009 ICC World Twenty20 in England, where they defeated Bangladesh in their opening match and progressed to the second stage. In 2010, they played 17 One Day Internationals, winning 11 and losing six.
Test Match Status till Now
In 2012, Warren Deutrom, the CEO of Cricket Ireland, announced his board’s ambition to play Test cricket by 2020. This aimed to prevent Irish players from switching to England to play Test cricket. The new strategic plan for Irish cricket aimed at increasing the number of participants in the game, improving the rankings, establishing a first-class cricket structure, and making cricket the fifth most popular team sport in Ireland.
After a decade of playing international cricket, full ICC membership was granted to Ireland in 2017, and its first Test match was against Pakistan in 2018. Andrew Balbirnie was appointed Test and ODI captain in October 2019 and took over the captaincy of the T20I in November of the same year. Ireland won its first away ODI series win over West Indies in January 2022.
