Jack Draper Clinches Career’s Biggest Title At Vienna Open 2024

Jack Draper produced a stellar performance to beat Khachanov 6-4, 7-5 in the Vienna Open final.

No. 7 seed Jack Draper clinched the first ATP 500-level title of his career with a win over Russia’s Karen Khachanov in the final of the  Vienna Open on Sunday in Austria.

It was the Brit’s biggest title of his career, having reached his maiden Grand Slam semi-final at the US Open last month. He will rise to a career-high ranking of 15th in the world now.

The 22-year-old  found himself trailing in the second set when Khachanov fought out of a 4-0 hole by winning five straight games. Draper reclaimed control from there by tying the match 5-5, breaking the Russian’s serve in the 11th game and rallying from a 15-40 margin in the 12th game.

Draper hit 30 winners in contrast to Khachanov’s 16. Draper also won 14 of 16 points at the net compared to 8 of 14 for Khachanov.

The Brit  produced an outstanding level to beat Russia’s Karen Khachanov 6-4 7-5 in the final of the ATP 500 event.

The 22-year-old southpaw, who reached his maiden Grand Slam semi-final at the US Open last month, will rise to a career-high ranking of 15th in the world on Monday.

A year ago, Draper found himself just at top 100 as he was recovering from shoulder injury.

“To win my first ATP 500, it feels incredible,” said Draper.

“I am incredibly happy and so proud of myself and my team. I am going to enjoy it.” “Honestly, I didn’t feel too nervous or tight. I just missed a few balls and made some wrong decisions, and Karen picked up his level”, he added

It marked a second title for the 22-year-old Briton but his first at an ATP 500 event, his previous success coming in the ATP 250 event in Stuttgart in June.

Jack Draper defeated world number 17 Lorenzo Musetti in the semi-finals 6-2, 6-4 on Saturday and dropped just one set in the entire Vienna Open tournament.

On the other hand, Khachanov, who won in Almaty, Kazakhstan, was eyeing for his second title. 

“I felt I was playing against PlayStation at the beginning – I had no chance,” said Khachanov.

 

The focus will now shift to the Paris Masters which starts on Monday. The ATP 1000 tournament will feature top players including Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, Alexander Zverev, Daniil Medvedev and Taylor Fritz.
