World No. 1 Jannik Sinner carried his dominant form on the ATP Tour by stretching his Masters 1000 winning streak to 30 matches after clinching a commanding straight-set victory over Australia’s Alexei Popyrin at the Italian Open on Monday. The Italian star is just one win away from matching Novak Djokovic’s record of 31 consecutive Masters 1000 victories, achieved during the Serbian’s remarkable 2011 season.

Sinner ranks second after Novak Djokovic to win the opening 25 Masters 1000 matches of a season, underlining his extraordinary consistency at the top level of men’s tennis.

Jannik Sinner made an explosive start, breaking Alexei Popyrin in the very first game to take early command of the contest. The World No. 1 used his aggressive shot-making to cruise to a 6-2 lead in only 39 minutes.

Sinner carried the momentum in the second set as the Italian allowed Popyrin almost no opportunity to fight back. Energised by strong support from the home crowd, the top seed dominated from start to finish, winning six consecutive games to seal a ruthless 6-0 set and secure his place in the round of 16.

Sinner spoke about his clash and said, “He is a big server and his percentage was not very high, which helped me a little bit. But I have been returning the second serves very well and I am happy to be in the next round,”

Jannik Sinner will take on Andrea Pellegrino next

Jannik Sinner is all set to face Andrea Pellegrino, while men’s second seed Alexander Zverev will take on 18th seed Luciano Darderi.

Coming to the Women’s singles, third seed Coco Gauff battled past fellow American Iva Jovic in a tense three-set encounter, saving a match point before clinching a 5-7, 7-5, 6-2 victory after two hours and 45 minutes.

Meanwhile, second seed Elena Rybakina and fourth seed Iga Swiatek advanced comfortably to the quarterfinals. Chinese duo Jiang Xinyu and Xu Yifan were knocked out in the opening round of the doubles competition.

In the women’s singles, Coco Gauff will next meet eighth seed Mirra Andreeva.
