Jasprit Bumrah Earns Career-High Rating Points In ICC Test Rankings

On Wednesday, January 1, Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah made history. In the latest ICC Test Rankings, he stayed at the top of the bowler’s list and also achieved the highest rating points ever by an Indian bowler.
Jasprit Bumrah Makes History in ICC Test Rankings
Bumrah’s outstanding performances in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy earned him recognition. He has been the best bowler in the series so far, taking 30 wickets in 4 matches. However, despite his great performances, the Indian team has struggled, losing 2 out of the first 4 matches in the series.
Bumrah, who has been shortlisted for the ICC Men’s Cricketer of the Year award (Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy) and the ICC Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year award, has improved his rating. He moved up from his previous high of 904, which he shared with Ravichandran Ashwin. Bumrah now has 907 rating points, placing him joint-17th on the all-time list alongside former England spinner Derek Underwood.
Outstanding Performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy
The list is topped by England seamers Sydney Barnes (932) and George Lohmann (931), who played over a century ago. Imran Khan (922) and Muttiah Muralidaran (920) are ranked third and fourth, respectively.
In the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Bumrah became the fastest Indian pacer to take 200 wickets in Test cricket. The previous record was held by the legendary Kapil Dev, who achieved this milestone in 50 matches during a Test against the West Indies in March 1983 in Port of Spain.
Bumrah reached his 200th wicket in just 44 Tests, making him the joint-second fastest among Indians to reach this milestone, alongside Ravindra Jadeja. Ravi Ashwin remains the fastest Indian to 200 Test wickets, achieving it in his 37th Test against New Zealand in Kanpur in September 2016.
Bumrah reached the 200-wicket milestone after dismissing Travis Head, the leading run-scorer of the series, who had scored back-to-back centuries in the Adelaide and Brisbane Tests. Overall, former Pakistani spinner Yasir Shah holds the record for the fastest to 200 wickets, achieving it in just 33 Tests. Among pacers, Australia’s Dennis Lillee holds the record, reaching the milestone in 38 Test matches.
At 31 years old, Bumrah also became the fourth-fastest to 200 Test wickets by balls bowled, achieving it in 8,484 balls. The record is held by Pakistan’s Waqar Younis (7,725 balls), followed by South Africa’s Dale Steyn (7,848 balls) and Kagiso Rabada (8,153 balls).
Bumrah reached the 200-wicket landmark with an impressive average of 19.56, the lowest among all bowlers. He also broke Kapil Dev’s record for the most wickets by an Indian pacer in a bilateral Test series on Australian soil. Bumrah has been in outstanding form, consistently troubling the Australian batters throughout the series.
Pat Cummins’ Strong Rankings Boost
Australia captain Pat Cummins, who is tied for fifth place with Glenn McGrath in the rankings with 914 rating points, also made gains in the latest rankings update. He helped his team win the fourth match of the ICC World Test Championship series against India in Melbourne.
Additionally, Cummins moved up to third place in the Test all-rounder rankings after scoring 90 crucial runs across two innings during Australia’s 184-run victory in the fourth Test.
