Joburg Super Kings (JSK) qualified for the fourth playoff spot with a thrilling 45-run victory over Paarl Royals in the final match of the SA20 league. With this victory, JSK not only managed to finish fourth but also eliminated Durban Super Giants from the competition.
The thrilling Joburg Super Kings vs Paarl Royals match that took place at Boland was filled with excitement, awesome performances, and playoff implications.
Joburg Super Kings vs Paarl Royals: What the Result Means
This vital win took JSK to qualify at fourth on the points table and they are now going to take on the Royals again in the Eliminator at Centurion on Thursday. The winner in that match will go forward to Qualifier 2 in Johannesburg on Friday. Meanwhile, Qualifier 1 will also be contested between the two-time champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape and Pretoria Capitals on Wednesday.
Injury Concerns Cloud Royals’ Campaign
Although Paarl Royals finished third, there are serious concerns regarding injuries for them too. Captain David Miller had a scare regarding his lower body injury while taking the catch but did not bat during the chase. Whether he will be fit for his team, as well as South Africa for the upcoming Twenty20 World Cup, to be held in three weeks, is questionable.
The SA side may already be losing JSK standby captain Donovan Ferreira due to a shoulder fracture. This could make things difficult for them as they head into the global tournament.
JSK Batting Recovery on a Tricky Surface
On a low and slow wicket, the decision to bat first seemed apt for the Joburg Super Kings. However, the early struggles did see them reduced to 74-3 in the 11th over. Yet the Super Kings regained momentum to reach a decent total of 166-5.
The pick of the bowlers was Leus du Plooy, whose unbeaten 54 off 27 balls gave the team much-needed impetus at the end and made sure that JSK had a total to defend.
New Captain Falls Early, Timmers and Pepper Stabilise
JSK were led by their third captain of the season, with Faf du Plessis and Donovan Ferreira unavailable due to injury. New skipper James Vince suffered a forgettable outing, bowled for a duck by left-arm spinner Bjorn Fortuin, who was eyeing an ambitious cut shot.
Recovery came through Neil Timmers and Michael Pepper as they stitched a very vital 49-run partnership for the second wicket. Timmers, 21-year-old wicketkeeper-batter, impressed on his debut as he struck four boundaries and guided JSK throughout the middle overs.
Wiaan Mulder’s Difficult SA20 Continues
It has been a disappointing tournament for Wiaan Mulder, whose poor form with the bat continued. Batting since the 17th over, Mulder had little time to get set and was outfoxed by a clever slower ball from Nqobani Mokoena. His wicket was the only one Mokoena would take on the night and summed up Mulder’s dismal run in the competition.
Royals Start Strong but Lose Their Way
In the chase between the Joburg Super Kings and Paarl Royals, Paarl Royals got off to a positive start. Lhuan-dre Pretorius demonstrated intent early on, hitting confident shots that took the total past 40 for Royals to reach 43-1.
His innings proved short-lived as soon as the ‘field restrictions period came to an end’ since he edged a ball back to the keeper in the form of Imran Tahir. After a promising start of 81 for 2 in the 12th over, Royals suddenly crashed, losing seven wickets for just 41 runs.
Spin Duo Seal the Game for JSK
The turning point was through the experienced JSK spin attack of Prenelan Subrayen and Imran Tahir, who accounted for five wickets, conceding only 31 runs in 7.1 overs.
At 46-year-old, Tahir proved yet again that age is just a number. His dismissal of Delano Potgieter and the ensuing celebration left Royals needing 85 off 47 balls, a target that soon became a distant dream.
