Joining Manchester United was a destiny: Raphael Varane

The French international joined Manchester United from Real Madrid this summer.

Raphael Varane says joining Manchester United was a destiny. The Centre-Back joined the Manchester club from Real Madrid in the summer for around 40 million pounds.

In 2011, before Varane’s move to Real Madrid, Sir Alex Ferguson traveled to Lille to meet with the then 18-year-old. Sir Alex went to meet with the player personally to convince the player to join Manchester United. However, it was not enough at the time as Varane chose Madrid instead.

He was part of a serial-winning Real Madrid side winning four Champions League, three La Liga, and a Copa Del Rey in the process. The 28-year-old formed a formidable partnership with Sergio Ramos at Real Madrid.

Raphael Varane decided to join Manchester United this season. He says he wanted a new challenge in his career.

“That’s my mentality,”

Varane continued,

“I want to be better. I want to improve. I want to push myself. This is a new challenge for me, a different competition, a different mentality, a different atmosphere. It’s all new for me but I’ve enjoyed every day so far.

It’s a big challenge to get Manchester United back to the top but I feel people want to win. People want to do great things with this club, and that’s a big motivation for me.”

The France international also adds that joining Manchester United became his destiny after meeting with Sir Alex Ferguson.

He says

“It was a special moment for me and my family,”

Varane on meeting Sir Alex.

“It’s amazing to meet a person like him at 18. You know, after that, it’s your destiny. Ten years in Madrid and now I’m here.”

On Pogba’s influence

It wasn’t just Ferguson who seemed to have an influence on Varane’s summer switch to United though.

The France international says that he also spoke to fellow French teammate Paul Pogba about life at United.

“Paul spoke to me about the club, about the atmosphere, about the expectations. Of course, he is a great player. But he also has very good, positive energy. He is a leader for the group. I’ve known him for a very long time so I’m happy to play with him.”
