The ACB has confirmed that Jonathan Trott will cease as the head coach of Afghanistan after the 2026 T20 World Cup. The tournament, scheduled to be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka between February 7 and March 8, 2026, will mark the end of Trott’s successful tenure with the Afghan national team.
ACB Confirms Coaching Transition Plan
In its official statement, the Afghanistan Cricket Board described the move as part of a “long-term strategic vision” to guide the next phase of the national team’s development.
“Coaching transitions are a natural part of the global cricket ecosystem,” ACB said in a statement. “This change marks a new chapter for Afghanistan cricket as the board continues to build toward sustained excellence.”
The ACB has also informed that the team’s batting coach, Andrew Puttick, would part ways with the squad after the completion of his contract on December 31, 2025. The South African made his entry this year, having previously performed a similar role with the Pakistan national team.
Impact of Jonathan Trott on Afghanistan Cricket
It was in July 2022 that Jonathan Trott took over and since then he has been through a radical transformation in the whole process of Afghanistan’s cricketing journey. The team got very strong and became a competitive one in all the formats, thus scoring very high with the top-ranked teams.
First appointed for an 18-month term, Trott’s contract was extended twice – up to 2024 and then to 2025 – in recognition of his success. In his time, Afghanistan won 20 out of 43 ODIs and 29 out of 61 T20Is, an enviable record for a developing cricket country.
“It has been a privilege to work with the Afghanistan National Team and to witness their passion, resilience, and hunger to achieve greatness,” Trott said. “I am proud of what we have accomplished together, and I will always remain a supporter of Afghan cricket. I wish the team and the Afghan people continued success in the years ahead.”
Accomplishments and Historic Performances under Trott
Trott’s coaching term will go down in history with some of the highest accomplishments of the Afghan team in international cricket:
The team made it to the ICC semi-final for the first time in history by memorable group match victories against New Zealand and Australia and ultimately coming out as 2024 T20 World Cup semi-finalists.
The ODI World Cup 2023 upraises of the Afghanistan team: The team registered notable wins against England, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, and almost got into the semi-finals after the final winners of Australia had a hard time with them.
ODI series victories: Afghanistan emerged the winner in the bilateral series against South Africa and Bangladesh, both held in Sharjah
Champions Trophy qualification: Their historic spot in the 2025 Champions Trophy was confirmed after finishing as one of the top eight at the 2023 World Cup.
Recent dominance: The national team of Afghanistan emerged victorious in the ODI series against Bangladesh with a 3-0 score and T20I series in Zimbabwe with the same score earlier this year.
The transformations of the team were mirrored not only in the skillful performance of the players but also in the coaching of Trott who was instrumental in forming a winning mentality among the players.
Trott’s Next Chapter: Franchise Cricket Awaits
Jonathan Trott is going to finish up his international services but he has already pre-empt the next job for him. The ex-England batter will be the Gulf Giants’ new head coach in the upcoming ILT20 which starts on December 2, 2025.
Trott had earlier been the head coach of the Pretoria Capitals in the SA20 League during the first season of 2024-25, before Sourav Ganguly took over. His increasing fame as a tactician and a safe-tempered leader has opened the door for him to play in the world franchise cricket circuit.
