Roma’s coach, Jose Mourinho, unequivocally dismissed any speculation surrounding his potential role as Brazil’s next manager, affirming his loyalty to his current Italian Serie A side.
“Brazil hasn’t approached me directly,” clarified Mourinho following Roma’s Italian Cup victory in the last 16 on Wednesday. He added, “I instructed my agent not to engage with anyone until Roma’s decision about my future is clear.”
Jose Mourinho refutes rumours
Refuting rumours linking him to the Brazilian national team’s managerial position, the Portuguese emphasized his trust in Roma’s ownership, the Friedkin Group. “I don’t entertain the rumours suggesting other managers for this role. I have faith in the Friedkin Group. I trust their integrity, and I don’t believe they’re negotiating with other coaches behind my back,” Mourinho stated.
Taking the helm at Roma in July 2021, the 60-year-old’s contract will conclude in June. Despite leading Roma to sixth place in Serie A over the last two seasons and securing the inaugural Europa League Conference title in 2022, Mourinho has openly criticised the squad’s quality and depth. Due to financial fair play constraints, the club’s limitations in the transfer market have restrained Mourinho’s ability to strengthen the team.
Did Brazil want Ancelotti instead of Mourinho?
Brazil, on the other hand, is grappling with one of the most challenging periods in football history. They currently sit sixth in South America qualifying for the 2026 World Cup. Recent hopes of appointing Carlo Ancelotti as the national team’s manager were dashed when Ancelotti confirmed his decision to remain at Real Madrid, extending his contract with the Spanish giants until 2026.
