Reports suggest that the team management of the Delhi Capitals has arrived at the decision to make KL Rahul to open the innings in IPL 2026 after his performance in the last season
The 19th season of the IPL is set to commence on March 28, 2026. The opening match of the tournament will be played between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Sunrisers Hyderabad. Meanwhile, the Delhi Capitals will play their first match on April 1 against the Lucknow Super Giants.
The Decision
Even before the season begins, the team has taken a significant step by deciding to assign a major role to KL Rahul. According to media reports, Delhi Capitals might make KL Rahul to open the innings in IPL 2026. Additionally, Rahul is expected to fulfil the role of the team’s first-choice wicketkeeper.
The Role
In the previous season, the Delhi Capitals entrusted KL Rahul with the responsibility of batting in the middle order, deploying him primarily at numbers 3 and 4. Performing admirably, Rahul scored 371 runs across 10 innings at an average of 53 and a strike rate of 146.06. However, the team’s opening pair did not prove particularly successful, as Karun Nair and Jake Fraser-McGurk struggled to deliver consistent performances.
The Performance
As the team’s overall performance began to dip during the season, the franchise promoted KL Rahul up the order to open the innings. Seizing this opportunity, Rahul played a magnificent unbeaten knock of 112 runs off 65 balls against the Gujarat Titans; he subsequently scored 11 and 35 runs in his following innings, which is the reason why the Delhi Capitals have decided for KL Rahul to open the innings in IPL 2026.

The Career
Looking at KL Rahul’s overall IPL career, he has amassed 5,222 runs across 136 innings in 145 matches, maintaining an average of 46.21 and a strike rate of 136.02. The majority of his best innings have come at the top of the order, which might have prompted the Delhi Capitals to make KL Rahul to open the innings in IPL 2026.
The Goal
Meanwhile, Rahul will once again have his sights set on making a comeback to the Indian T20 squad. He last played a T20 match for India during the 2022 World Cup. Consequently, the 2026 IPL is going to be crucial for him, as a strong performance could once again open the doors to Team India.
The Captaincy
The captaincy of the Delhi Capitals will once again rest in the hands of Axar Patel. The team had a brilliant start to the previous season; however, their performance subsequently dipped, and they failed to secure a spot in the playoffs. As such, the team will look to deliver a better performance this time around by experimenting with new combinations.
The Recent History
Delhi Capitals would aim to make it to the payoffs for the first time after 2021, when they finished third after losing to the Chennai Super Kings under the leadership of Rishabh Pant. Since then, the team has played under two different captains, but has not been able to make it to the playoffs even once.
