Twenty teams compete in La Liga, founded in 1929. After each season, the three teams with the lowest standings are demoted to the Segunda Division. The top two teams from the Segunda Division and the winner of the Second Division League play-offs replace the three relegated teams.

Every season, the top four teams in La Liga earn a direct ticket to the UEFA Champions League.

62 teams have participated in La Liga since its inception. Interestingly, the highest Spanish football league has produced only nine different winners.

Real Madrid holds the La Liga championship with the most straight wins. From 1960 to 1965, Los Blancos won five consecutive La Liga titles. From 1985 to 1990, they repeated the feat.

The first La Liga championship was won by FC Barcelona in 1929. The original season of La Liga featured ten teams. The Blaugrana claimed the title after defeating Real Union in the final round of the Liga. After playing 18 games, Barcelona earned 25 points, two more than their arch-rivals Real Madrid.
