Liverpool: The Reds win 3-0 against a ten men Leeds United
Mo Salah, Fabinho, and a late goal from Sadio Mane saw the reds win comfortably against Leeds United. However, 18-year-old Harvey Elliot suffered a horrible injury after a dangerous tackle from Pascal Struijk.
Liverpool dominated the game except for the early chance for Rodrigo. Klopp fielded a surprising midfield composition of Fabinho, Thiago, and Harvey Elliot. The German manager usually prefers to play industrious midfield. However, Klopp chose finesse today as he looked to combat the man-to-man marking system of the whites.
Liverpool’s midfield dominated Leeds as the individual quality proved too much for the home side. Thiago and Fabinho were able to find players in between the lines too often, cutting through Leeds’s midfield. Meanwhile, Leeds United’s man-to-man marking and the constant rotation of Liverpool players left huge spaces in the midfield.
On one such occasion in the 20th minute of the game, defender, Joel Matip carried the ball into the midfield un-marked and unchallenged. Driving up to the final third of the pitch Matip exchanged passes with Salah before finding Alexander Arnold on the wing. The right-back crossed the ball into the 6-yard-box. Mohamed Salah arrived for the cross and scored his side’s first goal. It was Mohammed Salah’s 100th Premier League goal. He is the fifth-fastest player to reach the century mark in the premier league.
However, after the first goal, Liverpool created many chances but wasted all of them. Particularly, Sadio Mane had a frustrating evening at Elland Road.
In the 50th minute, Fabinho doubled Liverpool’s lead after a penalty area scramble after a corner. Meanwhile, Leeds was brought down to ten men after Pascal Struijk made a dangerous challenge on Harvey Elliot. The youngster was taken off due to a severe ankle injury.
Patrick Bamford, in the 83rd minute of the game, attempted a long-range effort at the goal just beyond the halfway line. Alisson was off of his line and the goalkeeper had to back-pedal to stop the shot from going in.
Liverpool scored their third goal in the second minute of an eight-minute stoppage time. Henderson crossed the ball to the far post for the arriving Thiago and the midfielder played a neat pass to Sadio Mane, who scored finally, after missing a lot of chances.
Liverpool moves up to third place on the table. They are level on points with Manchester United and Chelsea but behind the two teams because of goal differences.
