Mahela Jayawardene to leave the Sri Lankan squad bubble and head home

Mahela Jayawardene exits the Sri Lankan camp

Mahela Jayawardene has confirmed to the media that he will be leaving the Sri Lankan squad and heading back home.

Jayawardene has been in a quarantine bubble since June and has not been at home for over four months. He was coaching the Southern Braves with whom he won “The Hundred”. Mahela, then traveled to UAE for the second leg of the Indian Premier League. He worked with the Mumbai Indians with whom he finished 5th in the IPL table.

Subsequently, he joined the Sri Lankan World Cup squad as a consultant. Sri Lanka qualified for the Super twelve round of the showpiece tournament. They won both of their qualifying matches to book a place in the World Cup.

Sri Lanka overcame Ireland to seal their spot in the super 12 round of the competition and ahead of the Super 12 round, Mahela has announced his decision of leaving the squad.

He backed his decision by saying,

“It’s tough. I just counted that I have been 135 days in quarantine and bubbles since June and I am in (the) last legs.

I hope that anyone can understand that being a father that I haven’t seen my daughter for that many days. definitely need to get back home.”

Jayawardene was quoted by Sportskeeda as saying.

Will be with the group through technology – Jayawardene

However, the former Sri Lanka captain has assured that he will be with the group with the help of technology.

He said, “I told them I will be with the group with the technology that we have.”

Mahela Jayawardene also said that he will set up a strategy for the team to employ in the Super 12 before leaving for home. Sri Lanka will play three matches in Sharjah and the rest two in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Mahela says he will prepare the side for Sharjah based on what he saw during the recently concluded IPL.
