However, not many are aware of the fact that, in addition to changing the dynamics of the Indian economy, Manmohan Singh played an instrumental role in rebuilding cricket relations with arch-rival Pakistan. This strategy was known as ‘cricket diplomacy’.

Following the 2008 Mumbai Terror Attack, which impacted the harmony and ties between the two countries, Manmohan Singh used cricket as a medium to heal cricketing relations.

One of the most special and memorable moments took place during the ODI World Cup 2011 when he invited Pakistan’s Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani to the semi-final match in Mohali, symbolizing the possibility of using sports for diplomatic engagement.

During Manmohan Singh’s tenure in the PM office, India and Pakistan played a bilateral cricket series in 2012-13, which included ODIs and T20Is. However, ever since then, most cricket matches between the two nations have been limited to tournaments organized by the ICC and ACC. The recent hesitation to travel for the 2023 Asia Cup and the 2025 Champions Trophy highlights the continuing tensions between the two countries.
