Mark Steven Howe, an American retired professional ice hockey defenseman and left winger, was born on May 28, 1955. After spending six seasons in the World Hockey Association (WHA), he played sixteen seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL). He is presently the Detroit Red Wings’ director of professional scouting. Howe is Vic Howe’s nephew, Marty Howe’s younger brother, and the son of Gordie and Colleen Howe. Howe shined as one of the best two-way NHL defensemen of the 1980s, finishing third for the Norris Trophy three times and reaching the Stanley Cup finals three times as a player, despite the immense shadow his father cast and splitting time between two leagues. In 2011, he was admitted to the Hockey Hall of Fame and is a member of the United States Hockey Hall of Fame. The Howe family was given the Wayne Gretzky International Award in 2000 in recognition of their significant contributions to the development and expansion of hockey in the United States.
