Matthew Breetzke Writes His Name in ODI History: The name Matthew Breetzke may not have been on everyone’s radar until recently, but the 26-year-old who turns out for LSG in the IPL has now written his name into ODI history. Matthew Breetzke has achieved something no batter has managed in the 54 years since the format began, sealing his place in cricket folklore.

Four Innings, Four Fifties – A Record Start

Matthew Breetzke scored a brilliant 88 against Australia, which meant he had passed fifty in each of his first four ODI innings. That makes him the first batter ever to do so. India’s Navjot Singh Sidhu came close with four 50-plus scores at the start of his career, but he needed five matches since he didn’t get to bat in one of them during the 1987 World Cup.

Matthew Breetzke’s numbers so far are stunning. He made 150 on debut against New Zealand, followed it up with 83 against Pakistan, then hit 57 against Australia, and now added another 88 against the Aussies. That’s one century and three fifties in just four innings, giving him a total of 378 runs at a jaw-dropping average of 94.50. Not a bad way to begin an ODI career.

Mixed Fortunes in Tests and T20Is

Matthew Breetzke has already featured in two Tests and 10 T20Is for South Africa, but success has been harder to come by in those formats. Whether he can carry over his ODI form remains to be seen. For now, though, he looks like the answer to South Africa’s prayers in the 50-over game.

IPL Stint and What Lies Ahead

He has also had a taste of the IPL, turning out once for LSG against RCB in IPL 2025, though without much impact. Fans will be curious to see how he performs in IPL 2026. It’s still very early days in his career, and how far he goes will depend on consistency, discipline, and determination.

A Rising Star for South Africa

Right now, Matthew Breetzke is enjoying a golden run in ODIs, and the longer it continues, the happier South Africa will be. A rising talent is beginning to blossom, and for this young man, the only way forward seems to be up.
