Max Verstappen says that though Red Bull did really well in qualifying for the Formula 1 race in Monaco, we should not get too excited, as he thinks it is too early to say that Red Bull’s problems are gone.
The Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona will show us how Red Bull is really doing.
Max Verstappen believes that the special track in Monaco might have hidden some of the problems that the Red Bull car has.
So, overall, Max Verstappen wants us to wait and see how Red Bull does in the race.
Monaco Grand Prix Performance Raises Hopes At Red Bull
Max Verstappen got a front-row spot at the Monaco Grand Prix. He qualified second behind Kimi Antonelli from Mercedes. Although Max was really close to be the first, but missed it by a few seconds.
This performance of his was a surprise because Red Bull has had a lot of problems with bumps on the track. The Monaco Grand Prix track seemed to work better for the Red Bull car, the RB22, than people thought it would. This helped Max Verstappen to do well and be near the front of the race.
Max Verstappen said, “You always have to run the car reasonably soft here in terms of set-up and suspension. In that area, it was better, but it is still our limitation when it comes to going faster.”
The Dutchman admitted he had not anticipated Red Bull being in the fight for pole position despite setup changes made after final practice.
“In that respect, I’m still a bit surprised that we were ultimately fighting for pole position,” he said.
“Of course, we changed a few things after the third practice session, but it wasn’t that much.”
Barcelona Will Be The Real Test
While Monaco offered reasons for optimism, Max Verstappen stressed that the circuit is far from representative of the challenges teams face across the rest of the calendar.
According to the Red Bull driver, Barcelona’s high-speed corners and aerodynamic demands will reveal whether the team has genuinely taken a step forward.
He said, “This is positive, but next week it’s a completely different circuit, then it’s a different world again.”
The RB22 has shown signs of improvement on tracks featuring slower-speed sections, but Max Verstappen believes the team cannot draw firm conclusions until it performs well on a more conventional circuit.
He explained, “That has already been the case recently, but we’ve also raced at circuits with mainly slow corners. We just have to wait and see. When Barcelona comes around, that’s the real test because you have high-speed corners again. We shouldn’t start celebrating too soon.”
Weekend Ends In Frustration
Although qualifying was encouraged, Max Verstappen’s Monaco Grand Prix did not go well. A problem with the power unit meant his car did not start properly from the grid. He was able to get back to the pits before stopping on the first lap. This ruined his chances of getting to the pole position.
Mercedes new driver, Kimi Antonelli, won the race, with his fifth consecutive win in the championship.
