India’s experienced Test opener Mayank Agarwal will make his County Championship debut with Yorkshire on a short-term agreement. The veteran batter will join the English county team before their match against Somerset at Taunton, which is set to commence on September 8, 2025.

Three-Match Spell Before Returning for Ranji Trophy

This will be Mayank Agarwal’s initial stint of English county cricket. He will play three County Championship fixtures for Yorkshire and then return to India ahead of the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy season, when he will take charge as Karnataka’s all-format captain.

Recent Form and Domestic Commitments

Before this international posting, Agarwal played for the Maharaja T20 Trophy, Karnataka’s top T20 league. He also played in the IPL 2025 season as a member of title-winning Royal Challengers Bengaluru, having been recruited as a replacement for injured Devdutt Padikkal.

Mayank Agarwal’s Experience in English Conditions

Though this is Agarwal’s debut county stint, he isn’t new to English conditions. The 34-year-old has been a part of two Test England tours the 2021-22 series (2-2) and the World Test Championship Final 2023 against Australia. He could not play the first match of the 2021-22 series due to a concussion. He has played for India A on several tours of England as well.

Stellar First-Class and Test Record

Having scored 8,050 runs from 190 first-class games at a career average of 43.98, including 18 centuries and 44 half-centuries, Mayank Agarwal is rich in experience to add to Yorkshire’s batting ranks. In Tests, he has scored 1,488 runs at an average of 41.33 from 36 innings, with four Test centuries to his name. His highest score in Tests is a commanding 243 against South Africa.

Indian Cricketers in UK Domestic Circuit in 2025

Agarwal is part of an increasing number of Indian cricketers playing in the 2025 County Championship season:

Khaleel Ahmed (Essex)

Tilak Varma (Hampshire)

Yuzvendra Chahal (Northamptonshire)

Ishan Kishan (Nottinghamshire)

Sai Kishore (Surrey)

Jaydev Unadkat, who will join Sussex this month

A New Chapter for Mayank Agarwal

For Mayank Agarwal, this brief stint with Yorkshire is a good chance to refine his red-ball skills in demanding conditions and pick up valuable experience. His presence is likely to add strength to Yorkshire’s batting order as they strive for a good end to the County Championship.
