England head coach Brendon McCullum does not doubt Jofra Archer as he prepares for the eagerly awaited Ashes series in Australia, labelling the fast bowler “unbelievable” and a possible match-winner for the winter tour.

Jofra Archer’s Fiery Return Sparks Ashes Hopes

After Jofra Archer’s brilliant display against South Africa in Southampton, where he took 4 for 10 from just seven overs, McCullum rated the pacer’s speed, quality, and bounce. This performance came after Archer’s Test return against India in July, when he took nine wickets in two matches.

“That was an unbelievable spell,” McCullum said. “It was box-office bowling…[It’s] not just his pace, but his skill, his ability to shift it both ways and to test batters with the steep bounce he gets. He’s a proper cricketer, hence why we’ve taken our time with him to make sure that we give him every chance to be in the biggest series of all of our lives.

Injury-Free Summer Justifies Cautious Comeback Strategy

The cautious England management rehabilitation plan for Jofra Archer now seems entirely vindicated. As McCullum explained, maintaining Archer’s activity level without putting excessive pressure on him has been important to his comeback.

“It’s always a delicate balance. Sometimes you need to keep bowling and you need to keep ticking over. I think a lot of injuries happen when you almost down the tools completely, not that I really understand how that works. But we’ve just got to make sure we work to the plan.

“We’ve had a good plan with Jof over the last little while and he’s rewarded us for the type of planning that we’ve had with performances like tonight. He’s going to be a huge player when we get to Australia, as a number of others are. But I don’t think we’ll wrap him up [in cotton wool] per se. We’ll just keep working with him on how he’s going and work out what’s best for him.”

Jacob Bethell’s ODI Heroics Push Test Case

While Jofra Archer makes the headlines, young batsman Jacob Bethell is making quietly a compelling argument for being included in the Ashes team. Having scored 58 at Lord’s, Bethell blasted a stunning 110 off 82 balls in Southampton, impressing the selectors mere months before the Ashes opener in Perth.

McCullum Leaves Door Open for Selection Shake-Up

Even though Ollie Pope is the present No. 3 of the Test team, McCullum is not discounting Bethell pushing his way in.

“We’ll sort that out when we arrive in Australia,” McCullum said. “Bethell has made outstanding strides. Scoring his first senior hundred in an England cap at 21 is special. The only other one to do that at 21 was [David] Gower.

Fitness News: Ben Stokes and Mark Wood Under the Spotlight

With the Ashes team announcement looming in late September, McCullum also gave news of the fitness of all-rounder Ben Stokes and pace bowler Mark Wood. Mark Wood will be back in action for Durham in the County Championship this month. Ben Stokes, on the other hand, is unlikely to feature competitively until the opening Test but is said to be training hard.

“Stokesy is working his backside off,” McCullum added. “The last series he played was possibly his best as a captain. A fit and firing Ben Stokes is key to us being competitive in Australia.”

England Squad Announcement Nears

England’s Ashes team for 2025 is promising to be thrilling and unpredictable, with Jofra Archer fit, Jacob Bethell in the ascendancy, and proven commodities like Stokes and Wood coming back into play. McCullum made it clear that with the countdown to the opening Test in Perth underway, form, fitness, and flexibility are vital.
