Mohun Bagan Retain ISL League Shield, Create History

Mohun Bagan Super Giant defeated Odisha FC 1-0 at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan on Sunday, defending their Indian Super League (ISL) Shield.

At Salt Lake Stadium, in front of jubilant home fans, Australian forward Dimitrios Petratos (90+3rd) scored in the third minute of extra time. 

In addition to earning a spot in the AFC Champions League 2, the continent’s second-tier club competition, Mohun Bagan SG secured the ISL Shield. They retained their League Shield that they had won during the 2023–24 campaign.

Record Tally 

With 16 wins, 4 draws, and just two losses in 22 games, Mohun Bagan SG became the first side in ISL history to reach the 50-point milestone.

Mohun Bagan achieved their 16th victory of the season with the victory over Odisha, the most by any side in the history of the championship.

Mohun Bagan has currently scored 43 goals in the ISL, 20 of which have been from set pieces, the most in the history of the league.

Mohun Bagan’s defense has been excellent this season and has had just as much of an impact as its attack in protecting the Shield. The Mariners have maintained 14 clean sheets, courtesy to their defence line and the goalkeeper.

With MBSG clinching the Shield, let us look at the different teams that have achieved the trophy over the years.

FC Goa(2019-20)

In the 2019–20 season, FC Goa defeated Jamshedpur FC 5-0 to become the first Indian team to win the coveted league shield.

Mumbai City FC(2020-21)

At the GMC Stadium in Bambolim, Mumbai City FC (MCFC) defeated ATK Mohun Bagan (ATKMB) 2-0, meaning that former coach Sergio Lobera finally got the chance to hold the League Winners Shield in his decorated career.

Jamshedpur FC(2021-22)

Jamshedpur FC struck to a precise plan and picked up a solitary goal win against ATK Mohun Bagan to ensure the top spot and the League Winner’s Shield, in the concluding match of the ISL-8 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Fatorda, Goa.

Mumbai City FC(2022-23)

Mumbai City FC beat FC Goa 5-3 to win the ISL League Winners Shield, at the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Goa on Saturday. It was the second Shield for the Islanders and the first under coach Des Buckingham.

Mohun Bagan Super Giant (2023-24 and 2024-25)

Mohun Bagan Super Giant clinched its first shield by beating Mumbai City FC 2-1 at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata on April 15, 2024. The Mariners wrested the title back from the Islanders courtesy of a goal each by Liston Colaco and Jason Cummings.

This season, Mohun Bagan Super Giant defeated Odisha FC 1-0 to retain its Indian Super League (ISL) Winners Shield at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata on February 23. After scripting the win, they also became the only to defend its title in the shield’s history.
