Michael Phelps– USA

US swimmer Michael Phelps is the most decorated Olympian of all time with 28 medals. He also holds the record of winning most gold medals at 23. The other being three silver and two bronze medals He won eight gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

He has taken part in five Olympics between 2000 and 2016 and holds the record for most gold medals in individual events and most medals in individual events.

Larisa Latynina– Soviet Union

An artistic gymnast, Larisa Latynina made her Olympic debut 1965 and won gold. Subsequently, she featured in two Olympic Games late and ended her Olympic career winning nine gold medals, five silver medals, and four bronze medals.

Latynina from the Soviet Union remained the most decorated Olympian for over 40 years until Phelps replaced her.

Nikolay Andrianov– Soviet/Russia

Andrianov featured in his first Olympics in 1972 as an artistic gymnast where he won a gold and a bronze medal. Appearing in the next two editions of the Olympic Games, he won a total of seven gold medals, five silver medals, and three bronze medals. 

With 15 medals, Andrianov is the third most decorated Olympian of all time.

Boris Shakhlin– Soviet Union

Another artistic gymnast for the Soviet Union, Boris Shakhlin won 13 medals in the Olympic Games. He made his Olympic debut in 1956 and featured in its next two editions. He took home a total of seven gold medals, four silver medals, and two bronze.

Ole Einar Bjørndalen– Norway

Ole Einar Bjørndalen competed in the biathlon event- cross country skiing with shooting a rifle. His Olympics appearances between1994 and 2008 fetched him eight gold, four silver, and one bronze medal.

Edoardo Mangiarotti- Italy

Edoardo Mangiarotti won 13 Olympic medals in total in fencing event. Between 1936 and 1960 Mangiarotti appeared in five Olympic Games winning six gold medals, five silver medals, and two bronze medals. He is the most decorated fencer in Olympic history.

Takashi Ono- Japan
