With 21 tournaments under its belt, the FIFA World Cup has proven to be a popular and fiercely contested sporting event. Exactly one coach has won the World Cup twice, and only 20 coaches have won the tournament. Leaving a lasting impression as a manager at the World Cup is incredibly challenging due to the tournament’s small size, but if you’re determined to uncover the best coach who did it, keep reading.
There have been more than 370 different managers or co-managers of teams in at least one World Cup game. Between 1982 and 2010, Carlos Alberto Parreira competed in no fewer than six editions of the competition, making him the manager with the most overall appearances.
Parreira is tied with Bora Milutinovi for the record of most nations managed during a single World Cup appearance, with five of them. Helmut Schon is the current holder of the records for most matches managed (25) and most matches won (16), both of which he achieved with West Germany between the years 1966 and 1978. Twenty different managers have been victorious in the World Cup, with Vittorio Pozzo being the only one to do it twice (with Italy in 1934 and 1938).
Helmut Schon:
- Helmut Schon has coached in a record number of World Cup games (25)
- He represented Germany in four World Cups.
- On German turf in 1974, Schon won the World Cup with his country.
- 1972 European Champion
- 1966 World cup runner
Helmut Schon is among the all-time greats in the coaching profession and holds the record for the most victories by a German national team coach. As the only player to win the FIFA World Cup and the European Championships, he also holds the record for most goals scored in a World Cup, which remains.
In 1974, he received the Silver Laurel Leaf and the Federal Cross of Merit, both of which were handed to him by the German president. Soon after, in 1980, Schon was made an honorary member of the German Football Association (DFB), and in 1984, he was awarded the FIFA Order of Merit; on September 1, 2015, Deutsche Post issued a commemorative stamp in celebration of what would have been his 100th birthday.
