Multan Sultans Owner Threatens Legal Action Following Dispute Over PSL Franchise Renewal

4 Min Read

PSL is moving close to possible legal issues as Multan Sultans owner Ali Khan Tareen has sent a serious warning to the League and PCB that he might be compelled to take the franchise’s deadlock to court for renewal. Tareen has gone public with his frustration, claiming that the management of the league has not responded despite many attempts by him.

Ali Khan Tareen shows frustration publically

In a strongly worded social media post on November 19, Tareen criticised the PSL and PCB for what he called “ghosting,” indicating that the franchise had been left without answers.
He wrote:

“If this ghosting continues we will have no choice but to take legal action… This whole situation is so unnecessary and could easily have been sorted out over tea and biscuits. But fragile egos make simple things difficult.”

Tareen has never been one to shy away from controversy, having once torn down a notice issued by the PCB demanding a public apology. He has often questioned what he describes as “unprofessional” management of the PSL.

Renewal in Question; Multan Sultans Left Out

The latest conflict reportedly revolves around the PCB’s refusal to renew the franchise contract of the Multan Sultans, while renewal offers have reportedly gone out to the other five PSL teams.

Tareen said:

Several emails requesting valuation details and a renewal letter were disregarded.

The management at PSL did not respond to their notices.

Even a direct letter to the PCB Chairman went unanswered.

Other franchises have questioned why Multan is excluded from the process.

Tareen added that the issue only became public because the PSL management “refuse to engage” behind closed doors.

PCB Clarification on Franchise Renewals

In response, PCB recently announced that the valuation process of all PSL franchises has been completed. As per their statement:

All compliant PSL teams have been provided with renewal offer letters that contain the revised franchise fees for the next ten years.

The wording here seems to suggest that Multan Sultans may currently be “non-compliant,” a category that raises further concerns for the franchise.

Possible Termination of Multan Sultans Contract

The situation has been further complicated with reports emerging that the PCB is considering an option to terminate the contract of Multan Sultans for alleged breaches of the PSL code of conduct. The PSL at the moment comprises teams from Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Peshawar, Quetta, and Multan.

There are also discussions going on about expanding the league to eight teams, with Hyderabad, Faisalabad, Sialkot, and Rawalpindi shortlisted as potential new franchises.

What It Means to PSL’s Future

The controversy involving Ali Khan Tareen and the management of PSL hands this league unwanted pressure when it needs to expand and grow commercially in the future. If unresolved, the controversy may lead not only to litigation but also impact the tournament’s credibility and operational stability.
