D Gukesh, the World Champion, is facing a lot of criticism after doing really badly at the Norway Chess tournament in 2026. American Grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura said that D Gukesh’s performance was a disaster.

D Gukesh will have to defend his title as World Champion this year. He had his time at the Norway Chess tournament, but ended up at the bottom of the list with only eight points.

This result is making people worried about how he will perform in the upcoming tournaments, like the Chess Olympiad in September and the World Championship match in November.

Everyone believes that D Gukesh has a lot of work to do to get ready for these tournaments.

Hikaru Nakamura Raises Concerns Over Gukesh’s Form\

Hikaru Nakamura has highlighted D Gukesh’s performance at the Norway Chess Tournament, pointing to his drop in world ranking, and asking how he will overcome his bad form before the World Championship match.

Hikaru Nakamura told EndGame AI,  “For Gukesh, this was an absolute disaster. I believe that Gukesh is slated to play the Olympiad in September before his World Championship match in November. But for Gukesh, this is horrible news. Gukesh, I believe, is now down to No. 27 in the world. I think he is the fifth-highest-rated Indian player. So it’s a complete disaster for Gukesh. Who knows what he’s going to do to try and fix these issues before the match, but this is definitely not what he was hoping for.”

Tough Tournament For D Gukesh

Gukesh took part in Norway Chess to gain momentum, but had a time being consistent. He started well by winning an Armageddon game, which showed he can fight back, but he could not keep up the good work and had a steady run of wins.

A big blow came when he lost to R Praggnanandhaa, another Indian chess player. Gukesh is now getting ready to play Javokhir Sindarov for the World Championship. His recent form is a concern now, and Gukesh needs to get his game on track before the big match against Javokhir Sindarov.

The World Championship against Javokhir Sindarov will be a test for Gukesh.

R Praggnanandhaa Makes History

Talking about the Norway Chess tournament, R Praggnanandhaa capped off an outstanding campaign by winning the Norway Chess 2026 title, further strengthening his position among the world’s elite players.
