The Carolina Panthers is a team that plays professional American football and is based in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Panthers are a National Football Conference (NFC) South division member team that plays in the National Football League (NFL). Bank of America Stadium in Uptown Charlotte houses the team’s headquarters and serves as its home field.

The Panthers have a loyal following across the whole Carolinas; but, before moving to Charlotte in 1996, the team’s home games were held at Memorial Stadium in Clemson, South Carolina. At Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina, the team holds its yearly training camp. It is one of only two clubs that represent multiple states, the other being the New England Patriots.

The Panthers, whose initial owner and founder was Jerry Richardson, were introduced as the league’s 29th team in 1993 and started competing in 1995. The Panthers had a strong first two seasons, going 7-9 in 1995 (a record for an NFL expansion team’s first season) and 12-4 the following year, winning the NFC West before losing to the Green Bay Packers, who would go on to win the Super Bowl, in the NFC Championship game.

They didn’t have another successful year until 2003 when they won the NFC Championship and lost to the New England Patriots 32-29 in Super Bowl XXXVIII. The squad didn’t make the playoffs again after making them in 2005 and 2008; instead, it didn’t make them until 2013, the first of three straight NFC.

The Panthers returned to the Super Bowl in 2015 but lost to the Denver Broncos after losing in the divisional round to the San Francisco 49ers in 2013 and the Seattle Seahawks in 2014. The squad has only once since then—in 2017—made the playoffs. The New Orleans Saints hold the second-most NFC South championships (five) since the division’s inception in 2002.

The Carolina Panthers will continue to be the NFC’s most recent team through 2022. Panther Football, LLC is the franchise’s official name, and David Tepper owns the team. On May 22, 2018, league owners unanimously endorsed Tepper’s purchase of the team from Jerry Richardson, who founded it. According to Forbes, the club is worth about US$2.3 billion.
