Volleyball
A net separates the two teams of six players in the team sport of volleyball. According to established rules, each team attempts to earn points by putting a ball on the court of the other team. Although the whole set of rules is lengthy, play often goes as follows: A rally is started when a player on one of the teams serves the ball from behind the back boundary line of the court, over the net, and into the opposing team’s court. Delivering the ball involves tossing or tossing it and then hitting it with a hand or arm. In their own court, the receiving team must keep the ball from reaching the ground. The team may touch the ball up to three times to send it to the opposing side of the court, but no one player may touch it twice straight. Often, the first two touches create an attack. An attack is an effort to return the ball over the net in a way that prevents the team receiving it from passing the ball and extending the rally, losing the point. A point is awarded to the winning team, and they also get to serve the ball to start the next rally.

Volleyball: History and Background
As a leisure to be played (ideally) indoors and by any number of players, William G. Morgan, a YMCA physical education director in Holyoke, Massachusetts (United States), invented a new game in December 1895 that he named Mintonette, a term derived from the game of badminton. The sport used elements from handball, baseball, and tennis into its design. Basketball, a different indoor activity that had only been created four years earlier in Springfield, Massachusetts, ten miles (or sixteen kilometers) away, was becoming popular in the region. For older YMCA members who wanted an indoor activity that was less physical than basketball but still required some athletic effort, mignonette was created.
The earliest set of regulations, drafted by William G. Morgan stipulated that there could be any number of players and that the court should be 25 feet by 50 feet (7.6 meters by 15.2 meters) in size. There was no restriction on how many times a team could contact the ball before delivering it to the opposing team’s court during a match, which consisted of nine innings with three serves for each side in each inning. A second attempt was permitted if there was a serving error. Except for the first-try serve, hitting the ball into the net was regarded as a foul that resulted in the loss of the point or a side-out.
