NBA Conspiracy Theory of 1984 NBA Finals – Celtics vs. Lakers

The 1984 NBA World Championship Series, also recognised as Showdown ’84, was the championship round of the National Basketball Association (NBA 1983-84)’s season, and the conclusion of the season’s playoffs. [1] The Eastern Conference champion Boston Celtics vanquished the Western Conference champion Los Angeles Lakers in a seven-game Finals, clinching Game 7 111-102. During the series, Celtics forward Larry Bird averaged 27 points and 14 rebounds per game, earning him the NBA Finals Most Valuable Player award (MVP). Bird was also named the regular season MVP of the league that year.

This was the long-awaited grudge match between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Boston Celtics after their rivalry was reignited in 1979 when Magic Johnson and Larry Bird joined the league. Following the Lakers’ victory in Game 1, a crucial steal in Game 2 resulted in a tie game, which the Celtics won in extra hours to tie the series. The Lakers easily won Game 3 and came close to winning Game 4 but were again defeated. With the series tied 2-2, the Lakers and Celtics each ended up serving on their home court to send it to Boston for Game 7.

The Series schedule was peculiar due to the broadcast schedule. Game 1 took place on a Sunday afternoon in Boston, approximately 36 hours after the Lakers defeated the Phoenix Suns in the Western Finals. The teams then took three or more days off before playing again on Thursday night. The teams then had two days off after Game 3 on Sunday afternoon in Los Angeles, not attempting to play again until Wednesday night.

This prompted Larry Bird to claim that Commissioner David Stern had demanded that the match be called in favour of the Lakers in order to prolong the series to a seventh game. Despite his conspiracy theory, the Celtics won Game 7 by a score of 111-102.
