Netflix is set to air its first-ever live Formula 1 race this year as part of a strategic partnership with Apple TV in the United States.
Apple recently secured exclusive U.S. broadcasting rights to Formula 1 beginning in 2026, taking over from ESPN in a five-year deal reportedly worth close to $150 million per season. Now, in a surprising twist, Apple has partnered with Netflix to cross-promote Formula 1 content across their platforms.
Under the agreement, Netflix will stream the 2026 Canadian Grand Prix live to U.S. audiences- a first for the platform, which has traditionally focused on on-demand content rather than live sports. In return, Apple TV subscribers in the United States will gain access to the eighth season of Netflix’s hit Formula 1 docuseries, Formula 1: Drive to Survive.
A Major Step Into Live Sports for Netflix
Netflix’s decision to broadcast a live Formula 1 race reflects its growing interest in live programming. The company has experimented with live events in recent years, and Formula 1 provides a globally recognized, high-energy platform to continue that strategy.
“Drive to Survive” has been widely credited with fueling Formula 1’s explosive growth in the American market. By pairing the drama-driven storytelling of the series with live race coverage, Netflix deepens its connection with both longtime fans and newcomers to the sport.
Apple’s Tech-Driven Vision for F1
While Netflix gains a marquee live event, Apple is building what it describes as a next-generation viewing experience for subscribers.
Rather than relying solely on the traditional international broadcast feed, Apple plans to offer a highly customizable, multi-angle format. Fans will be able to stream up to four feeds simultaneously, including:
-
- A live driver tracker and data channel
- Dedicated onboard “podium channels” following the top three drivers
- Team-specific streams featuring onboard cameras and live team radio
- Optional access to coverage from Sky Sports F1
A dedicated Formula 1 hub on Apple TV will also feature race highlights, archival content, and exclusive programming.
According to Formula 1 executives, the offering is designed to provide American fans with a viewing experience unlike anything previously available in the market.
Apple’s senior vice president of services Eddy Cue said: “We’re excited to announce something I think no one was expecting.
“Netflix, I think, has played a pivotal role in growing F1 since the launch of Drive to Survive, and we’re thrilled to make F1 content more broadly available to new and existing US fans on both Netflix and Apple TV.”

Expanding the U.S. Footprint
The collaboration places Formula 1 content on two of the largest streaming platforms in the United States, significantly expanding its visibility. While most races will remain exclusive to Apple TV subscribers, select events may be offered free on the platform. Additionally, Tubi will stream certain races as part of a broader distribution strategy.
The move underscores Formula 1’s determination to solidify its American growth trajectory.
