Neymar’s chances of making Brazil’s World Cup squad have taken another hit after he was left out of Carlo Ancelotti’s latest selection for the upcoming international friendlies in the United States.
Brazil are set to face France on March 26 in Boston and Croatia on March 31 in Orlando. These matches will be the final opportunities for players to impress before Ancelotti names his definitive World Cup squad on May 18, making Neymar’s absence even more significant.
Speaking at an event in São Paulo after the squad announcement, Neymar did not hide his disappointment. The veteran forward admitted he felt “upset and sad” about missing out but made it clear that his focus remains on working his way back into contention. He emphasized that his dream of playing at the World Cup is still alive and that he will continue to push himself in training and matches.
Can Neymar still make it to the World Cup?
The 34-year-old, who remains Brazil’s all-time leading scorer with 79 goals, has not featured for the national team since October 2023. He suffered a serious knee injury, tearing his ACL and meniscus, which has kept him sidelined for a prolonged period. Although he recently completed a full 90 minutes in a 1-1 draw for Santos FC against Corinthians, his performances have yet to fully convince the national team staff.

Ancelotti was straightforward in his reasoning, stating that Neymar is “not at 100 percent” physically. However, the Italian manager did leave the door open, suggesting that if Neymar can regain full fitness and form, he still has a chance to be included in the final squad.
Meanwhile, younger attacking options continue to make their case. Endrick has earned a recall after an impressive run of form at Lyon, while Vinícius Júnior and Raphinha headline Brazil’s attack. The likes of João Pedro and Matheus Cunha have also been included, highlighting the increasing competition for places.
With just one squad announcement remaining, Neymar’s World Cup dream now hinges on a strong finish to the season and, most importantly, proving he can return to peak condition in time.
