Norway’s Johannes Høsflot Klæbo has achieved a milestone by becoming the first male athlete in cross country skiing to notch up five medals at the Trondheim Ski World Championships.
The five-time Olympic champion cracked the feat at the 2025 FIS Nordic Ski World Championships in Trondheim on home snow when he helped his country win gold in the men’s 4 x 7.5km team relay.
With 14 World Championship gold medals, Klaebo surpassed compatriot and two-time Olympic champion Petter Northug as the most decorated male athlete in the sport.
Klæbo only brought home the 13th straight Norwegian relay gold ahead of Switzerland and Sweden.
He is the first man to win five golds at one worlds, a feat Russian woman Yelena Välbe achieved at the last edition in Trondheim 1997 for what was then a sweep of all golds.
The 28-year-old has the opportunity to improve on his achievement if he wins the concluding 50 kilometres on Saturday by clinching all six golds now on offer.
Klaebo has won gold in the free sprint, skiathlon, 10km classic, men’s team classic sprint, and now the men’s team relay at Trondheim 2025.
The relay victory completed a fourth straight sprint/team sprint/relay hat-trick for Klæbo who also won his first distance race titles in Trondheim over 10km and in the skiathlon.
“I just tried to enjoy every single second out there…In Norway, there is one thing that’s good enough and that’s winning”, Klaebo said after achieving the feat.
The Norwegian, who has seven Olympic medals in his cabinet, for his third Olympic Winter Games next year at Milano Cortina 2026.
