Novak Djokovic will begin his Australian Open 2026 campaign against Spain’s Pedro Martinez after the men’s singles draw was announced on Thursday, January 15. Seeded fourth, the 10-time Australian Open champion has been placed in the bottom half of the draw alongside two-time defending champion Jannik Sinner of Italy.
The 38-year-old Serbian is chasing a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam title and an 11th crown at Melbourne Park. However, concerns remain over his fitness. Djokovic last played competitive tennis in November when he appeared at the Athens Open and he recently withdrew from the Adelaide International, citing a lack of physical readiness. Further doubts arose when he cut short a training session in Melbourne due to a neck issue.
If he progresses deep into the tournament, Djokovic is on a potential collision course with world No. 2 Sinner in the semifinals, with a possible final showdown against Carlos Alcaraz.
Djokovic has a storied history at the Australian Open, lifting the trophy in 2008, 2011–13, 2015–16, 2019–21, and 2023. However, he has suffered semifinal exits in his last two appearances. In 2025, he reached the semifinals of all four Grand Slams, retiring injured in Australia and later being stopped by either Sinner or Alcaraz at the other majors.
Encouragingly for his fans, Djokovic showed positive signs in a pre-tournament exhibition match on Thursday, easing past American Frances Tiafoe 6-3, 6-4 in one hour and 22 minutes. He appeared physically comfortable during the match, offering a glimmer of hope ahead of his opening-round clash with Martinez, who is currently ranked No. 71 but has been inside the top 40 within the past year.
