ODI World Cup 2023: New Zealand defeated Sri Lanka by 5 wickets

New Zealand defeated Sri Lanka by 5 wickets with 160 balls remaining. The 2015 and 2019 runner-ups have pretty much booked their spot in the semi-finals and will face India at the Wankhede Stadium in all likelihood. Here is a recap of the second innings.

New Zealand gets off to a good start

Chasing just 172 runs, New Zealand looked in no mood to take their time with the chase. The positive intent was evident right from the first over. Devon Conway struck a four in the first over off Dilshan Madushankha’s bowling. Rachin Ravindra then smashed Maheesh Theekshana for a four in the following over. Madushanka lost a review while challenging a caught-behind call against Conway in the third over. Conway smashed Madushanka for three fours in the fifth over as the young pacer conceded 14 runs in the over.

Dhananjaya de Silva was brought into the attack in the sixth over and was smashed for a six by Ravindra. Conway continued to attack Madushanka and smashed two consecutive fours in the seventh over. De Silva was smashed for a six and a four by Ravindra in the eighth over. Theekshana bowled the last over of the powerplay and was hit for two fours as New Zealand scored 73 runs in the powerplay.

New Zealand built on their start despite losing 2 quick wickets

Dushmantha Chameera bowling his second was smashed for a six by Ravindra in the 11th over. The 23-year-old batter struck a four in the following over off Theekshana’s bowling. Chameera dismissed Conway in the 13th over. Conway scored 45 runs in 42 balls hitting nine fours. Theekshana in the following over dismissed Ravindra who scored 42 runs in 34 balls hitting three fours and sixes each.

Daryl Mitchell started off his knock with a four on the first ball. The Kiwi batter smashed a six and a four each in the 15th over. Mitchell smashed another four in the 16th over. Angelo Mathews came into the attack in the 17th over and was struck for a four by Kane Williamson. Mitchell smashed Theekshana for a six in the 18th over as New Zealand looked to get to the target in a hurry. Mathews was struck for a four in the next over but dismissed the Williamson on the following delivery.

Madushanka came back into the attack in the 20th over and was welcomed with a four by Mark Chapman. Mitchell too smashed him for a four in the same over. Sri Lanka was gifted a wicket as a mix-up between Mitchell and Chapman resulted in Chapman getting run out. Glenn Phillips just like Mitchell struck a four on the first ball he faced.
