In football, a team’s success is directly tied to the success of its coaching staff. Without them, a group would be lost and unable to formulate a plan to win. Most people have the image of a grizzled old coach with white hair and crow’s feet who has spent his life studying the finer points of the beautiful game. A new generation of leaders is emerging today, proving that one only needs exceptional tactical acumen to be a successful manager. See some of the most promising young coaches in football today.

When compiling our list of the youngest coaches in football, we looked specifically at those who have or are leading a professional team rather than a youth program. All of the coaches on this list are under 40 years old, and they all happen to be football coaches.

Who is the Youngest Coach at FIFA?

The youngest head coach in World Cup history is also an Argentinian, just like this tournament.

In 1930, at age 27, Juan Jose Tramutola captained Argentina to victory in the inaugural World Cup. Even though his team made it to the championship game, they lost 4-2.

German Otto Rehhagel, 71, coached Greece at the 2010 World Cup and holds the record for the oldest coach at a World Cup.

Louis Van Gaal is on the cusp of breaking this record; however, Otto Rehhagel’s first game at the South Africa tournament occurred when he was 71 years, 10 months, and 3 days old, while Van Gaal’s opening game will occur when he is 71 years, 3 months, and 14 days old.

Who is Juan Jose Tramutola?

Juan José Tramutola coached for the Argentine national team. He helped defend Argentina to a gold medal at the 1929 Copa América and a silver medal at the first World Cup in Uruguay. They were the two coaches for the Argentine team, along with their friend Francisco Olazar. Tramutola was the “technical director” at the company. He did so at the tender age of 27 years and 267 days, making him the youngest coach in World Cup history. Argentina’s first game was against France.

From January to July of 1938, Juan José Tramutola was CA Boca Juniors’ head coach. Under his guidance, the team finished in fifth place in the championship. In 1948, he coached Ferrocarril Oeste, a team in the Second Division. His other coaching gig was with Vélez Sarsfield.

It is a dream for all managers to be able to coach a team in the World Cup, and Tramutola was able to make that ambition come true at such a young age. At this point, no federation will hire a manager who does not have a significant amount of relevant work experience. It would be a herculean job for them to lead their team to World Cup eligibility, even if they were to become managers at a younger age.
