Olivier Giroud to Leave LAFC, Set for Sensational Ligue 1 Return with Lille
Olivier Giroud’s American dream is officially wrapped up.
The World Cup winner and former Chelsea and AC Milan striker has mutually agreed to terminate his contract with LAFC, the club confirmed on Friday. His final match in the Black and Gold will be this Sunday against the Vancouver Whitecaps. After that? Bonjour, France.
Giroud is set to sign for Lille, who are preparing for life after Jonathan David. The Canadian goal machine is expected to walk in free agency, and Lille have identified Giroud to bring some veteran firepower up top. At 38, it’s not exactly a signing for the future but then again, Giroud has never needed pace to make an impact. It’s all about that perfectly timed header and a sprinkle of savoir-faire.
From Hollywood to Hauts-de-France
It was a blockbuster signing when Giroud landed in Los Angeles last summer. A big-name arrival from AC Milan, he was expected to light up MLS with his experience, style, and goals. But in truth? The script didn’t quite hit the mark. Five goals and three assists in 37 matches isn’t terrible, but for a player of his caliber, it left LAFC fans wanting more.

Even during the FIFA Club World Cup, Giroud struggled to impose himself. Across 161 minutes against Chelsea, Esperance, and Flamengo, he was largely ineffective. The fairytale didn’t quite materialize.
Lille: Risk or Revival?
Lille’s interest in Giroud isn’t without its risks. Ligue 1 is no country for old men, just ask any forward past their prime. The Frenchman, despite his wealth of experience, struggled with MLS’s physical pace. Can he really go toe-to-toe with Ligue 1 defenders every weekend?

Still, what he lacks in legs, Giroud makes up for in leadership, locker room presence, and the ability to pop up with the kind of goal that gets carved into granite. If Lille are looking for a wise head to mentor younger attackers while chipping in with the odd match-winner, this could just work.
Final Whistle in LA, Fresh Start in France
As LAFC GM John Thorrington put it, “Olivier has been an exemplary professional.” And while his American chapter didn’t sparkle on the pitch, he remains a class act on and off it.
Now, it’s Lille’s turn to roll the dice.
