The sixth seed, a former world number one from Serbia, defeated the Russians 6-4, 6-1. The 35-year-old, who has won 21 Grand Slam titles, will play either Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti or Denmark’s Casper Ruud for a spot in the semi-finals of Paris Masters.
Prior to that, Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov was defeated by world number one Carlos Alcaraz, 19, who advanced to the round of eight with a straight-set victory. Next, the Spaniard will play either Holger Rune of Denmark or seventh-seeded Andrey Rublev of Russia.
In his last two outings, in 2019 and 2021, Djokovic won the title. He has won 16 of his last 17 matches in Paris, with his lone loss coming to world No. 19 Khachanov in 2018 final. Although Djokovic attacked Khachanov in his first service game, the Russian came back to tie the score at 3-3 before the Serb took advantage of the situation to break Khachanov once more at 5-4 to seal the set.
After that, Khachanov kept his serve, but Djokovic easily won the rest of the second set in an hour and 27 minutes. In his second tournament since winning the US Open and rising to the top spot among men’s players in September, Alcaraz followed up his initial straight-set victory over Yoshihito Nishioka of Japan with another ruthless performance.
The Spaniard finished off the victory in one hour and 12 minutes after winning nine of the first ten games. At 3-3 in the second set, Dimitrov was able to tie the score, but Alcaraz saved two break points in the following game to win the match. Before the ATP Finals begin in Turin on November 13th, the Paris Masters is the season’s last regular ATP Tour event.
Alcaraz, who has already won titles in Miami and Madrid this year, will start as the top seed in Turin after Rafael Nadal lost to American Tommy Paul in the second round. Alcaraz is aiming to capture his third ATP Masters 1000 championship of the year.
If he wins in Paris, the young athlete will hold the top spot for the entire year before making his finals debut. “Get more sports news, cricket news, and football updates, log on to sportsdigest.in. Follow us on Facebook or Twitter and Subscribe to our YouTube Channel.”
