For the unversed, the Australian cricket team hadn’t won the Border-Gavaskar Trophy since 2014-15. They lost two home and two away series in the past 7 years. Pat Cummins, who became Australia’s Test captain in 2021, had an outstanding performance in the 2024/25 series, leading his team to victory. He made history by becoming the first captain ever to win 20 matches in the World Test Championship, after Australia won the Sydney Test.

Under his captaincy, Australia has won 20 out of 33 matches. Ben Stokes is second with 17 wins from 29 matches, and Virat Kohli is third with 14 wins from 22 matches. Kohli stepped down as captain in January 2022.

Here’s a list of captains and their number of wins:

  • Pat Cummins: 20 wins
  • Ben Stokes: 17 wins
  • Virat Kohli: 14 wins
  • Rohit Sharma: 12 wins
  • Joe Root: 12 wins

Cummins is one of only two captains to lead his team to a World Test Championship title. Australia won the 2023 WTC final by defeating India, claiming the trophy for the first time. Now, Australia has qualified for the 2025 WTC final, where they will play South Africa from June 11 to 15 at Lord’s Cricket Ground. This will be South Africa’s first time reaching the WTC final.

Australia had a tough start to the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, losing the first match in Perth by a huge margin of 295 runs. However, they bounced back strongly, winning the second match by 10 wickets. In the third game in Brisbane, Australia dominated, but rain prevented them from securing a win.

In the Boxing Day Test, Australia took 7 Indian wickets in the final session to go 2-1 up in the series. They then comfortably won the fourth match in Sydney, claiming the series 3-1 and the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Pat Cummins acknowledges Kohli’s impact on cricket

Cummins praised Kohli’s influence on cricket, highlighting the impact he’s had on the game. In the post-match press conference, Cummins said, “It’s always been a wonderful contest. More than just the runs that he scored, he brings a bit of theater to the game which is sometimes good and sometimes it can rile you up as an opposition.”

He also mentioned that playing against Kohli has been an enjoyable experience for him.

Reflecting on Kohli’s impressive career, Australian captain Cummins stated, “He’s been one of the star batters for the last decade or so.”

He also highlighted the importance of taking Kohli’s wicket in a match from a tactical perspective.

This praise comes amid calls from fans and former players for Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to be dropped from India’s Test team due to their recent form.

The series loss to Australia also caused India to miss out on a spot in the World Test Championship final, where Australia will play South Africa at Lord’s in June.
