Premier League: 5 red cards on Matchday 2, Chelsea & Man Utd lose

Five red cards sum up the Matchday 2 weekend. Chelsea and Manchester United lost as Brighton, Arsenal and Manchester City remain the only teams with two wins.

Matchday 2 ended with five players getting booked with red cards. Tottenham defeating Manchester United was one of the highlights of the weekend while Chelsea carried on with their poor form from last season as they lost to their city rivals, West Ham with a 3-1 margin.

Brighton carries on their goal-scoring form

Brighton once again won a game with a 4-1 margin. Under manager Roberto De Zerbi, the Seagulls have managed to score a lot of goals and have been clinical with their attacks. They scored four past Luton Town on the opening weekend and now they scored four against Wolves. Kaoru Mitoma opened the scoring for the Seagulls in the 15th minute with a sensational piece of dribbling to cut inside defenders, Semedo and Lemina. He was assisted by Pervis Estupinan. Estupinan doubled the lead after being assisted by Mitoma in the 46th minute. Five minutes later the Seagulls scored again as midfielder Solly March scored after being found by a great pass from Julio Ensisco. Four minutes later it was a repeat of recent events as March scored once again after being assisted by Ensisco once again. Wolves finally broke the dreadlock as Hwang Hee-Chan after coming on as a substitute scored in the 61st minute. Deep into injury time, Matheus Nunes was booked with a red card as he received a second yellow card.

Tottenham scores two past United

Tottenham registered their first win over the Red Devils at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Manchester United‘s defence was penetrated with ease as Pape Matar Sarr scored early on in the second half. Sarr converted a deflected cross from Dejan Kulusevski to open the scoring for the North London club. Man United came close to finding an equaliser a couple of times after the first goal but was unlucky to not score. In the 70th Ben Davies came on as a substitute for Destiny Udogie. Davies was quick to make an impact as his scuffed shot at the goal after taking a big deflection from Lisandro Martinez resulted in the second goal for Tottenham. United’s start to the season has been quite poor. After getting saved by a referee blunder on the first matchday, United are lucky to have three points.

Manchester City defeats Newcastle United

While their city rivals faced a humiliating defeat away from home, City defeated last season’s 4th-placed team, Newcastle United. World Cup winner Julian Alvarez scored for City after being assisted by Phil Foden in the 31st minute. The game was always in control of the defending champions as they allowed only seven shots from the Magpies, while only one of the shots was on target. In response, City had 4 shots on target from their 14 shots.

West Ham hammers Chelsea

Chelsea was on the receiving end of yet another great performance from the London rivals. West Ham the current Conference League champions put up a show for their home fans as they defeated The Blues. Nayef Aguerd opened the scoring quickly as he headed the corner from set-piece maestro, James Ward Prowse. The Blues quickly levelled as Carney Chukwuemeka scored in the 28th minute. Chelsea had a great chance of taking the lead as Sterling was fouled in the penalty box resulting in a penalty for the visitors. Enzo Fernandez failed to convert the spot kick and take the lead. Early on in the second Michail Antonio restored the lead for the Irons as Ward-Prowse recorded his second assist of the game. Aguerd received a second yellow card which meant that West Ham were left with 10 men with more than 20 minutes remaining. Making his debut, the big-money signing, Moises Caicedo from Brighton conceded a penalty during the added injury time. Unlike Chelsea, West Ham were able to make the most of their opportunity as Lucas Paqueta converted the penalty kick to win the game 3-1.

Crystal Palace 0-1 Arsenal

The Gunners have carried on with their pursuit of winning the Premier League for the first time since their famous Invincibles season. After a goalless first half, a free kick 35 yards from the goal resulted in a penalty. Saka was fouled which resulted in a free kick, Gabriel Martinelli took the free kick quickly and caught Crystal Palace players off guard who did guard Eddie Nketiah. Nketiah was through on the goal when keeper, Sam Johnstone fouled him to gift Arsenal a penalty. Martin Odegaard kept his cool and converted the penalty kick into a goal. Another game in which a player received a red card as a consequence of a second yellow card. Takehiro Tomiyasu, Arsenal defender in the 67th minute received a red card leaving the runner-up from previous with 10 men for more than 20 minutes.
