Igor Thiago struck twice late on in the 2nd half to seal a 3-1 victory for Brentford over Newcastle United in thrilling Premier League match at the Gtech Community Stadium.
Although the wider football world has started to turn its attention towards key fixtures, such as Nottm Forest vs Leeds United, this was an encounter offering lots of excitement, drama, and tactical talking points for Premier League fans.
Brentford Battle Back After Barnes Opener
Newcastle took the lead midway through the first half when Harvey Barnes found space inside the box and fired through Caoimhin Kelleher’s legs. However, Brentford refused to be rattled and came out much stronger after the interval.
The equalizer came courtesy of Kevin Schade, who capitalised on a flicked header from Sven Botman following a long throw from Michael Kayode, nodding home to bring the Gtech crowd to life.
Thiago’s Late Double Seals the Win
The balance was completely swung in Brentford’s favor when referee Stuart Attwell pointed to the spot after Dan Burn clumsily brought down Dango Ouattara inside the area. Burn, already on a yellow, was shown a second card and dismissed as Newcastle were down to ten men.
With regular keeper Nick Pope being forced off through injury, substitute Aaron Ramsdale made his Newcastle debut but could do little to stop Igor Thiago, who calmly slotted from the spot.
Thiago continued to make the most of Malick Thiaw’s defensive mistakes, as the Brentford forward scored again to make it 3-1 and bringing his season total to nine goals.
Brentford Analysis: The Gtech Fortress Grows Stronger
Brentford’s dominance at home has continued. Having already beaten Liverpool, Manchester United, and Aston Villa, the Bees added Newcastle to their growing list of victims. Only Manchester City have managed to win at the Gtech this season.
Manager Keith Andrews praised his side’s intensity and tactical discipline, saying they aimed to “imprint our gameplan and make it the kind of match we wanted.” It worked to perfection.
Their aggressive pressing, smart long throws, and composure described how the team had made their comeback. Both individual brilliance and the collective belief were well depicted by Thiago’s brace and Schade’s header.
Newcastle Analysis: Away-Day Misery Deepens
The defeat continued a worrying trend for Newcastle United, who have not won an away league match since April and dropped to 14th place, hovering precariously two points above the relegation zone.
Despite taking the lead, Eddie Howe’s side managed only one shot on target all game. They also lost key battles winning fewer aerial duels, covering less distance, and showing little resilience after conceding.
That was reminiscent of last week’s collapse against West Ham, where Newcastle was also in front before ultimately falling 3-1. Their away form, lack of consistency, and mental lapses are fast becoming major concerns.
Premier League Upcoming Fixtures
Brentford next travel to Brighton on Saturday, 22 November (15:00 GMT) at the Amex Stadium, before hosting Burnley a week later. On the same day, Newcastle welcome Manchester City (17:30 GMT) and then travel to Marseille in the Champions League on Wednesday 25 November (20:00 GMT.)
While Nottm Forest vs Leeds United prepares for its own must-win day, Brentford’s win also reminds us how factor a team’s form, mentality and home advantage can be on the Premier League table.
