Premier League returns for its second matchday. In this article, we will take a look at results from previous matchdays, this week’s fixtures and more.
Premier League after a great opening weekend will return for its second matchday. The first matchday saw exciting clashes with Chelsea holding Liverpool to a draw at Stamford Bridge while the defending champions kicked off in some style beating Burnley away from home.
Matchday 1 Results
Manchester City defeats Burnley
Manchester City kicked off the Premier League season in some style as they scored the first goal in just four minutes. Erling Haaland quickly completed a brace by scoring another goal in the 36th minute. Rodri scored in the 75th minute, meaning City scored three goals while keeping a clean sheet. Anass Zaroury from Burnley after coming in as a substitute got a red in injury time.
Arsenal vs Nottingham Forrest
After finishing second last year, Arsenal would be looking to go for Premier League glory. With new signings like Kai Havertz, Declan Rice and Jurrien Timber they have strengthened their squad. Arsenal defeated Nottingham Forrest by a 2-1 margin courtesy of goals from Eddie Nketiah (26 minutes) and Bukayo Saka (32 minutes). Taiwo Awoniyi scored from Nottingham Forrest in the 82nd minute to decrease the deficit.
Newcastle scores 5 against Aston Villa
Newcastle United after securing Champions League football last season kicked off the new season in a great manner as they managed to defeat Aston Villa by a 5-1 margin. Sandro Tonali who was at the centre of all the jokes from rival clubs about leaving Newcastle opened the scoring for The Magpies in the 6th minute. Moussa Diaby equalised for Aston Villa in the 11th minute, but soon after that Newcastle once again took the lead with Alexander Isak scoring in the 16th minute. Isak scored again in the 58th minute to complete his brace and with goals from Callum Wilson (77 minutes) and Harvey Barnes (90+1 minutes) Newcastle completed their thrashing of Aston Villa.
Chelsea holds Liverpool to a draw
After a disastrous last season where they finished 12th, Chelsea kicked off on a pretty positive note as they held Liverpool to a draw in the opening weekend. Luis Diaz scored early on in the game for Liverpool in the 18th minute and later in the first half only, Axel Disasi equalised in the 37th minute.
Manchester United saved due to referee’s blunder
Raphael Varane’s header in the second half put Manchester United ahead but the game was remembered for what happened late in injury time. Wolves in order to equalise late into the game launched an attack which resulted in United’s new goalkeeper, Andre Onana colliding with Craig Dawson in the penalty box. Referee Simon Hooper even after a VAR review decided not to give a penalty. This resulted in the referees for the game being suspended for matchday 2.
