Ravichandran Ashwin has always been one of the most exciting names in Indian cricket. Whether on or off the field, he keeps fans talking. So, when the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) announced his sudden retirement from the IPL on August 27, 2025, it surprised many.
At 38, Ashwin leaves behind a big legacy. He is the fifth-highest wicket-taker in IPL history with 187 wickets in 221 matches and an impressive economy rate of 7.20. He was a key player in CSK’s first two title wins in 2010 and 2011 and later played important roles with Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals.
But his final season in 2025 was difficult. He managed only seven wickets in nine matches, and CSK finished last on the table. Many believe that frustration and poor form pushed him to step away. However, looking closely, this decision may not be the right one for him.
Here are a few reasons why Ravichandran Ashwin’s IPL retirement could be a mistake.
1. Other Teams Would Still Value Him Highly
Ravichandran Ashwin’s IPL journey has been nothing short of legendary! 🔥💪✅ Chennai Super Kings – 97 Wickets
✅ Rajasthan Royals – 35 Wickets
✅ Punjab Kings – 25 Wickets
✅ Delhi Capitals – 20 Wickets

Ashwin’s second stint with CSK didn’t work out as planned. With Ravindra Jadeja and Noor Ahmad already in the side, he often became the third spinner and struggled to find a defined role.
But not every franchise has the luxury of so many spinners. In fact, several teams lack an experienced Indian spinner like Ashwin. His presence would have allowed them to balance their overseas signings better by focusing on foreign fast bowlers and batters.
Had CSK released him for the 2026 auction, there is little doubt that multiple franchises would have fought to sign him, even at his age.
2. His Form Wasn’t As Bad As It Looked
On paper, Ashwin’s IPL 2025 numbers look poor, but a deeper look tells a different story. CSK used him often in the powerplay overs, where spinners usually struggle. In that phase, he went for runs and couldn’t deliver his best.
But outside the powerplay, his numbers were much better six wickets at an economy below eight. That shows he still had the skills to trouble batters when used in the right conditions.
His recent performances in the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) also prove he is far from finished. He took 13 wickets and scored nearly 300 runs with a strike rate above 150. Clearly, his overall form is still strong.
3. Players Like Him Are Rare in T20 Cricket
All-rounders who can bowl quality spin and bat in different positions are rare in the IPL. Ashwin is one of the very few who bring both skills to the table.
Over the years, he has batted in almost every position from No. 3 to No. 8, depending on what the team needed. That flexibility, combined with his bowling experience, makes him extremely valuable. Very few Indian players offer this balance today.
4. His Experience Is Irreplaceable
Beyond stats, Ashwin’s biggest strength is his cricketing brain. Young players in any franchise could have learned from his tactical skills, especially in pressure situations. He has a history of outsmarting world-class batters, and that kind of experience cannot be easily replaced.
